what if i am 22? what soes thathave to do with anything? I know i want this, I have been wanting it since i was 16. do YOU have a problem with this?

My brother went through that, too. He'd said all his life that he didn't want children, didn't ever plan on having kids, and wasn't ever going to want to. He went to the family Dr. and told him that, and told him that he wanted a vasectomy.

My family Dr. told him to wait, to see if that really was his choice. The produndity of Dr.s comment was simply this: someday, you might meet a woman who wants children. And you want to give them to her. When that time comes, you will regret that you had a vasectomy. So wait for a while until you see how your life plays out. Use a condom instead, and have her use birth control. But wait.

That statement, told to my brother when he was about your age and knowing the idential things you know, prevented my brother from having a vasectomy. I have two neices and a nephew now, thanks to my family Dr,s wisdom and foresight.

I'd suggest you wait a while. You might indeed find the woman of your dreams. You might indeed want to create life with her. And if that's so, what a horrible thing to realize you can't - because of a decision made when you were single, young, and disillusioned.

What you do with your body isn't my concern. But, as I see it, you've got some living to do before you really realize what you want, and what your life will be. 'Til then, don't do something which is nearly impossible to reverse *(and I say nearly because it can be done on occasion...not something to count on). So wait...it can't hurt.

Michele

I've never wanted kids either, and that hasn't changed in 25+ years. Now I'm 42. I don't agree with the comment "So wait...it can't hurt." What if you use condoms or some other sort of birth control, and that method fails (nothing is 100% except abstinence). For the next 18-21 years you will be at least financially responsible for something you knew you never wanted in the first place.

I don't necessarily agree with the statement that some day you'll meet a woman, and you'll want to "give them to her." Women I've dated have always known from early on that I never wanted kids. Even though I would have married one or more if that wasn't an issue, I wasn't going to change my core feelings for someone else. On the same note, I never expected someone to change their feelings about wanting kids just because I didn't want them. If they have always wanted them, they should have them. Just not with me. [/rant]

So the bottom line of this long-winded reply is to get the vasectomy if you want it. Explain to your doctor what your reasons are, and if he won't do it, you'll have to find someone else who will.
There are battered women? I've been eating 'em plain all of these years...

It also does not show up on men very easily.

I read a few years ago that 98% of sexually active american woman had HPV.

Sucks for you.

There is no way to test for men....

98% is WAY high....more like 70% of people (not just women) Guys just walk around passing it around to anyone they sleep with, in addition it can take months to go away. The virus can sit dormant for YEARS before doing any damage as well.

There is a bunch of info on this board about this already..

Why guys and not girls?

The comment was more that men are just carriers....yes women give it to men who pass it along...it goes both ways....but men never have to hear "You have cancer" because of it.

Thought I would add a moral adult viewpoint to this conversation.

Dunno whether this has been pointed out or not in this thread. But your situation is ripe for lots of ANAL SEX. Don't snip it. Take blatant advantage of your girlfriends desire to not use the pill.

Hooray.

edit for poooor spuling

I'll be chatting to your GF at a later date Pedder ;):ph34r:

Just bring yourself and tell him what you told us.

I had a vasectomy 14 years ago, after fathering two kids. But I still had to go for the interview and explain why I wanted one. The doctor doesn't want to get sued if somebody changes their mind. It's not bad to make you think over your reasons either.

You really should think it over too. If you say you'd never be a good father, I'll take your word for it. But you might want to marry and some women won't marry a guy who can't give them children, it's something to consider. But ultimately, it's your choice and if you're really sure, then you should be able to get one. They ARE reversable, but that's not a sure thing. But don't sweat it, you should be able to persuade the doctor.

You could always offer to sign a waiver.....

I don't agree with getting a vasectomy at the age of 22. I think it's too early in life to make that decision- however, I don't know you. So I'll give you advice on what I think might convince a doctor to do the surgery.
Some sound advice- do not- I repeat, do not tell the doctor "If you don't do the surgery for me, I'll go find someone else who will." He will absolutley tell you to have a nice day- because he's not going to do the surgery.
Instead, just tell him about your life- you're a Skydiver/BASE jumper. Tell him you understand the inherint (sp) risk in participating in this sport, and you wouldn't want to have a child fatherless beause of an accident related to the sport. Also explain that you have wanted this surgery for over 6 years. Explain all the points about not liking/wanting kids. You need to convince this doctor, that a vasectomy for a 22 year old man is the best choice.
Telling the doctor that you froze some sperm could work for or against you. On one hand, he may see it as you covering all the bases, and being responsible if you decide later in life to have kids. On the other hand, he may see you freezing your sperm as you not being 100% sure that you don't want to have kids. So I'd be careful using that in your argument.
Reality- I think you will have a hard time finding a doctor to do the surgery. But good luck to you.

Tell him you know that this is not a form of birth control, it is the end of being fertile. Tell him you understand that this is forever and that you have made the decision and have no intention of ever producing a child. It worked for me, 12 years ago.
Skydivers don't knock on Death's door. They ring the bell and runaway... It really pisses him off.

hmmm...

on the paper i needed to fill out before my interview appointment it asked 'name the reasons you are seeing your urologist'

i wrote -
"I guess i have the weird ability to reproduce"
"i kinda want to change that"

when did this problem start?
"puberty"

my appointment was today:)
the interview with the doc took about three minutes. i guess i forgot to tell you guys that i am i jedi, and i used jedi mind tricks on my doc.

doc- 'so calvin, how many children do you have?'
me- "none"
doc- 'and you want to keep it that way?' (chuckle)
me- " thats the idea"
doc- 'ok, talk to the secretary in the waiting room, she will set you up'

I have the procedure on the 30th.

that was pretty easy.
