Name a good road trip to take from San Diego area.

I'm planning on buying a new car soon and I'm gonna break it in with a road trip or two. I'v got one in mind going up the 1 to Monterey. I'v always loved that drive. Anyone got anything else? I'll only have about three days for each trip.

You really really really should road trip to College Station. Of course you'll have a place to stay and you know we'd have a good time. If you're not current I'll take you on a tandem.:D

Make a few short trips first, with plenty of variable speed, shorter miles. My recommendation, take lots of trips to Elsinore. Up I-5 to Route 74 (Ortega Highway), jump, return same route, repeat as necessary. B|

Ortega Highway, one of my all time favorites, ever.

First, the beach to surf, then on Elsinore to jump, then jam up to Big Bear to Ski a few runs...then hand the keys to the the bar tender in Big Bear, tie one on, crash at a hotel, then enjoy the ride home the nest day, maybe hit Elsinore for a jump, grab the 74 (ortega hwy) to the coast, surf, coffe, then south on the 5.

No way dude, I had a friend that went to UCSB and he said its only a 24hr drive. So its only a 1 day trip.:P

Ok, all joking aside. You're always welcome at my house and if you can ever make it to this part of TX you'll have a place to stay. If you let me know in advance when you might be able to visit I'll take off work so we can definately have a great time!

You could always come in for Skyfest. And/or we can meet up in CO for the CPC Championships in 2007. I'm definately going this year.:)

hahah I'm gonna buy a 2007 VW GTI in United Grey with the DSG tranny and the 18 inch rims. I can't make up my mind if i want to spend the extra $1200 on the Sunroof.

Get the sun roof.

Then come to TX and we can tak epics of your VW and my 1973 VW. :)

My problem is this. If i get the Sunroof I'll have to wait another month to save the extra cash for it to keep my monthly payments around $350.

Check the road conditions.... it typically is closed through the winter.

Oh, and if you decide to take the coastal drive to Moneterey let me know - would love to take you to lunch or dinner in Ventura!!!!

Congrats on the new car!!!!! B|

For a plain old drive, I'd recommend:

Start at Otay

Go east on 94 through Campo (some pretty country)

Take 8 into the El Centro valley (cool vistas)

Go north from Ocotillo Wells on 52, then take the Great Southern Overland Stagecoach Route of 1849 (it's actually called that) into Scissors Crossing. Some very cool desert out there.

Take 78 into Julian and get a piece of pie.

Take 78/67 down through Ramona back to San Diego.

Drive should take about 5 hours plus stops.

...be sure to stop in San Luis Obispo!

First, stop by the Madonna Inn and take a piss. Seriously. The urinal in the men's bathroom there is cool.

Second, park somewhere downtown and ask how to find Bubblegum Alley.

And third, if you can plan it so you're there on a Thursday evening check out the Farmer's Market downtown. It's not just farmers selling produce. They close the street for a few hours and there's food, music, entertainment and some excellent people watching opportunities.

Get the sunroof. $1200 would add what, $17-20 per month? Just do it. You live in California...a sunroof should come standard anyway. If you spent the money on a Civic Si, you'd get a sunroof included (along with everything else being standard...;))

Opie it's not recomended to drive long distances on a brand new engine. You need to vary the RPMs so it's not at a constant. This will burn a groove into the cylinder walls and cause you major headaches later in the life of the car.

Take it on short trips with variable RPMs. DO NOT USE CRUISE CONTROL! Until at least your first oil change at 2500mi.

You could take the S6 up Palomar Mountain and come back down on the S7. It's a beautiful drive and a nice winding road. (But that's only a short trip from San Diego.)

And, speaking of men's urinals, you could stop at the Palomar Observatory while you're up there; the restrooms are nice. Look, I even have a picture...

:D
