How does soap work?

I've wondered this for a while. Does it release some kind of enzyme to break the bond between your skin and the dirt? What about car wash?

Basically there is a hydrophilic (water loving) part of the soap molecule and a hydrophobic (water hating) part. The hydrophobic part attracts the grease, oils, or whatever you want to wash away and sort of latches on to it. The hydrophilic part makes the whole mess water soluble, so you can rinse it away with water.

There are no enzymes involved.

Unlike what our friend Grue implied, I am an expert when it comes to body wash.
For our American friends, I highly recommend this fine product, which dual usefulness will surely impress not only the lucky user, but all the fine women in his entourage.

You sure are full of questions lately. Maybe you should check your local TV listing for a show called "Mr.Wizard".
