Classic Hollywood Skydiving Movies

Recommended Posts

So I'm looking to put together a library of all the Classic Hollywood Skydiving Movies. So far here is what I'm getting.

Point Break
Cutaway
Drop Zone
Terminal Velocity
Gypsy Moths
Fandango

any other recommendations?

I'm not really interested in anything that was totally done in a studio or just kinda had a skydiving scene in it like Charlie's Angels, James Bond, Tomb Raider II, or XXX. They just don't seem to qualify as skydiving classics.

well if that's the case then you should take Point Break off the list because it only had that one scene at the end. it was a kickass scene, but the rest of the movie was about surfing and robbing banks.

Excuse me but Point Break had 2 skydiving scenes in it. One was when they took Keanu out for his first skydive and they were all talking and he magically knew how to arche and fly right to them to make a big round and the other was when Keanu jumped out of the plane without a rig and chased the other guy and caught him and had a 20 minute conversation about who was going to pull.

Skydivers lacks everything condusive to a good movie. No plot, no continuity, no action, no story, no intelligent dialog, no acting ability, no soundtrack, not much of anything. In the second of the Coleman Francis trio, Harry and Beth are a struggling couple, trying to run a parachute school. But Harry is messing around with Suzy. That is until Suzy's boyfriend Jimmy finds out, and decks Harry. Much to everyone's dismay, there is a freak accident at the school, which closes them down. Poor Beth finds herself in the arms of mechanic Peter. That is until Harry finds out about it and fires Peter. Meanwhile the FAA, has sent out an investigator to find out about the accident. FAA man Bob makes unwanted passes at Beth who thinks she can patch up her fractured marriage with Harry. But Oh No. Suzy, still mad about being thrown back to Jimmy, decides to get revenge on Harry.

Did you follow that? Take this indiscernable plot; throw in really bad acting, weak dialogue, poor sound recording, 5,000 continuity jumps, and plot jumps, a hand full of public domain classical pieces passed off as a soundtrack, and you've got a turd fit for the garbage compactor. Avoid this crud at all costs! 1/2 *

Sounds Perfect! and thank for the PM on Honeymoon in Vegas.

Anyone else think "Honeymoon in Vegas" qualifies?

This post seems to have already hit the topic.

I can't find "The Skydivers" in anything but in a Mystery Science Theater 3000 DVD.

Totally forgot about Reign of Fire. Hate to say it but that movie qualifies. Wish I could track for over a minute and a half exitting from a low altitude helicopter.

If just one scene makes the movie list-worthy, then:

Just about any James Bond flick...

Either Charlie's Angels One or Two (don't remember)

XXX (skysurfing, BASE)

Mission Impossible (Ithink)

The list continues ad infinitum...

Face it, any truly respectable action movie has skydiving in it! Thus, we rock.

I have the MST3K DVD and the original unedited version of the movie "The Skydivers" is on the back of the "fun" one.

Can't seem to find a cheap deal on that collection. It'll cost as much as all the other skydiving movies I bought put together. Shame it can't be purchased individually.

Also, what is the take on Reign of Fire as a "classic" skydiving movie. Sure skydiving played huge role in the movie (skydivers saved the world accomplishing what nukes could not). But every bit of the unrealistic skydiving was filmed in front of a green screens.

Terminal Velocity

Ranks as one of the worst movies I've ever seen.
BLECH!
Doesn't deserve to be remembered.

You are way out of line sir!

I think the hallmark of a skydiving classic it that it is a bad movie which totally misrepresents the sport. Half the fun of watching one is picking apart how awful it is. That said I still think there needs to be real skydiving in it. Otherwise, the worse it is the better it is.

Wasnt that the one with some cheesy Flying Elvis impersonators???

And the cash keeps rolling in, almost 15 years after the fact.
God bless "the Flying Elvi"

I was on another web site about abandoned airfields and one was the Quartz Hill airfield in Ca. , and it said the movie "Skydivers" was filmed there in 1963. I grew up about a mile from from it. My first plane ride was from quartz hill. So now I have to buy that video.

There are two ways to buy it that I know of. And both are as Mystery Science Theater 3000 videos. You can buy the MST3K version by itself on VHS. Or if you want the original version and/or DVD you can buy the MST3K Vol 1 DVD set. One side has the MST3K version and the other has the original.
Warning. I bought the DVD just because I HAD to complete my collection. It REALLY sucks. I'd say the saving grace was the opportunity to laugh at the skydiving stuff were it not so overshadowed by being mostly comprised of slow paced boring melodrama.

I put it on the big screen at the DZ one night and only one person showed even passing interest in it.
