pilatus_p 0 #1 November 21, 2006 Apologies for the sermon, but I feel this needs to be said... Over the last month I have had two PM's from people saying they no longer wish to post here. They say they came in hoping to find a community and support, but found hostility, intolerance and prejudice. I am a newbie, that much is true, and so my knowledge of skydiving is limited. However my knowledge of people is just as rich as anyone who posts here and I do not understand why some posts become so full of hate so quickly. I have been guilty of it myself and I don't like the fact. I found this page online and I wanted to post it here. http://www.rider.edu/~suler/psycyber/conflict.html. I like this forum and it can be a great place for information and bonding between skydivers. I like the occasional spiky comment and barbed humour, I think that is unique to our sport. I think its great to bring new people to the sport, and DZ.com has been there longer than any other - it should be the place that new jumpers see as their introduction to the skydiving community. But lately it seems to have become something much more unpleasant and dark, with people attacking each other it seems in almost every thread. It may have always been like this, and perhaps most people feel there is no point trying to change it; But is this the face we really want to be presenting to the skydiving world? It certainly isn't the attitude I would want on my DZ - why should we have to put up with it here? It only takes a little patience to delay hitting reply. To give yourself a little time to re-read the person's comments and perhaps hear them differently, before loosing off a barrage of sweet-tasting revenge. Lets cut each other some slack, give the moderators a break from breaking up fights, and most importantly make this board a fun place to post. pash 0 #2 November 21, 2006 skydiving is a cross-section of the population... dz.com is a cross-section of the skydiving community (given only those with internet access that happen to post). Pilatus_p, given these facts, it is not unreasonable that you are going to get MANY different opinions or inputs... one of the most difficult jobs of the student is to decide upon the information which he / she absorbs as fact. person on person is the best resource. jason
slotperfect 7 #3 November 21, 2006 Anytime you come upon that type of content, PM one of the Mods for that forum. We'll handle it - that's what we're here for! Thanks for the article - it was an interesting read. I saved it to pass on in the future.Arrive Safely John
slotperfect 7 #4 November 21, 2006 Many different opinions and inputs are healthy, forwarding, and entirely welcome when they are posted in accordance with the forum rules. Treating one another with respect is important to our online community. It may take a bit more effort to be objective in a conversation with opposing views, but usually both parties walk away better informed about both sides of the issue at hand. What most people don't realize is that the volunteer Moderators have a limited amount of time to devote to the DZ.com forums. We like to spend that time making our own small contributions to the sport by providing our own input or insight where we can, and learning a few things to make our own skydives safer and more fun. Unfortunately, when we have to spend all of that limited amount of time weeding through PA filled pissing contests, the constructive input suffers.Arrive Safely John
darkwing 5 #5 November 22, 2006 Unfortuantely it is a problem. There are dickheads everywhere. Many of the dickheads in the skydiving world are at least interesting or amusing. Some are not. Please try to not let the rudeness of a very few get in the way of enjoying the many. -- Jeff My Skydiving History
recovercrachead 0 #6 November 22, 2006 Its skydiving! Skydivers have to have thick skin. I learned that early. If you dont have thick skin your not going to want to stick around. Start growing some skin or find something else to do because your not going to change skydiving.Track high, Pull LOW!!!
