skycat 0 #52 November 7, 2006 I could care less about 0-60 I'm not racing it, what I care about is handling and acceleration for passing and getting out of the way of something bad heading your way. Which it does beautifully. One big selling point was the rear doors, I tend to carry a laptop bag, backpack, and purse, so hauling that in and out of the backseat with only two door is a pain in the butt. Plus it's a dead sexy car. I was able to get it fully loaded with the grand touring package for under 30K two weeks ago and it's a 2007.Fly it like you stole it! It's the poor man's Audi (or, an Audi for people who don't need to pay extra for the Audi name ). quade 4 #60 November 8, 2006 QuoteSuggestions? Well, you've been given some fairly hilarious suggestions so far. I especially like when you ask people for "practical" skydiver cars they toss in things like Vets and Miatas. Riiiiight. I was in a similar situation to your about 6 months ago. I had a few cars on my short list and it ran the gammut from ultra-practical and gutless to a bit too aggressive and not practical at all. I was looking for the ultimate yin-yang balance and settled on the VW GTI. Mid-$20s depending on how it's equipped (mine's upper $20s), roomy enough for 4 real people or 2 people and a lot of gear, LOTS of handling and low end torque, more than speedy enough to get you into to trouble or, if you drive it conservatively, you can get some decent gas milage out of it. No. You're never going to beat the Evo on the street and you're also not going to get the gas milage of a Prius, but I think it's a DAMN fine compromise. You might wanna check 'em out. By all means do NOT make up your mind until you've driven one with the DSG transmission. Awesome.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver

ypelchat 0 #64 November 8, 2006 QuoteNow that my little Vibe is "a total loss"? If I was smart I'll save some $$ and get something used and econimical, which would give me more $$ for jumpy. Ive been itching for a Mitsubish EVO ever since they came out with the Lancer version and I sold my VR4 Galant. But thats not qute the practical skydiver car. Ive found a couple used Audi S4s for sale too. Not too pricey at that. I dont want a full size truck again, Ive decided against it. Its just not practical when living intown Atlanta. Hell I even considered buying another Vibe, but they dont make the GT version anymore. I want something sporty, but roomy enough, and durable enough for skydivers and their stuff. Suggestions? Tough choices ! (At least in my case) I wanted vehicle # 1 Ended up with vehicle # 2 Yves.

I bought a B5 A4 in 2000 instead of a Passat (a B5 A4 with more rear seat leg room and a lower price tag) because Audi would sell me one with a V6 + Quatro + manual transmission and VW wouldn't. An S4 would be substantially more powerful.

V6 Passats only come with automatic transmissions. I don't know where that came from because I'm driving one right now. Well, not RIGHT now because I'm sitting at a desk in LA and my car is in Seattle, but you get the picture. My 2001 Passat GLX is a V-6 with manual transmission. Maybe you can't get it with the other Passat models, or maybe you couldn't get it in the 2000 model year, but I most definitely own (and love) one. (And yes, I did clarify in a later post that I was thinking A4 when Hippie mentioned the S4, and they are quite different animals)."There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. I was drooling over the RX8 before its release, too. Got the Mitsubishi Eclipse GTS which is serving well, but I -still- have to look every time an RX8 passes by. Nice...! One thing that I've really come to love about my GTS is the hatch back. First one I've ever owned and it's been more like a truck to me than any other car I've owned. I've hauled things from mattresses to bricks in the back with no problem loading or unloading. A hatch back is kind of like a car/truck offspring. ltdiver Don't tell me the sky's the limit when there are footprints on the moon

I'm not a "huge" guy AND in my youth drove a FIAT X1/9 so I know what a small car is, but I recently drove the RX8 at a Zoom-zoom event and constantly found myself leaning toward the center of the car because of the head clearance. Otherwise, the RX8 is zippy enough, but I actually expected a bit more in the low end because of the Wankel's rep and didn't really "feel" it until much higher up on the tach. My car is, in theory, a bit less powerful but I swear by my patented "butt dyno" that it's getting more low end torque.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
