Ipod FM trans for car

Recommended Posts

I want to play my Ipod in the car, but don't want to bend over for the $500 the dealer wants to integrate it into the car. So, what FM transmitter works best? Would you get a mount or just let is sit on the seat or drink holder?

You can get aftermarket adapters for most factory stereo's for $75-125. They're going to cost a little bit more than most FM adapters, but the sound quality will be much better.

You can get a decent stereo for your car for $100 or less, with an AUX input on the front of it. That's what I have. Then all you need is a $3 cable to connect your MP3 player to your stereo. Hint: keep iPod volume maxed out and use car stereo for volume control, otherwise you'll introduce unnecessary noise into the system.

FM sounds like crap, btw.

And if you really want to get crafty you can save $100 and hardwire an aux port onto the back of your existing stereo somehow... but it wasn't worth the effort to me.

Go to Walmart, not in the Electronics department but to the car audio deparment. They have a generic one that'll charge your ipod and transmit to your stero for $24 bucks. It'll also attach to anything with a stereo jack on it too if you want to play other things.

If you go to the electronics department they're gonna rape ya for the adapter for the ipod, works just the same though AND it charges at the same time ;)

Also... I will add that I don't think it's a great idea to have your MP3 player on charge at all times. Will wear the battery out a lot faster. Even on the LONGEST of drives, I have enough battery to last me, if I charge the night before.

I've never heard of anyone who was happy with an FM transmitter. Here is what I put in my Jeep:

It plugs into the jack on the factory radio where the optional CD changer would have been. Dig around on this site, and you may find something that works with your car.

I got this one for my Nano

Griffin iTrip

It works great in my Jeep. Volume is controlled through the stereo as well.

$500? Holy cow!

You can get factory stereo adapters for $80-150 from just about everywhere for just about every kind of car/truck.

$500? At that price you could buy a nice much better head unit with intrigrated Ipod with playlists, etc through the head unit AND intrigrated sat radio. That would include the install price and/or some new speakers as well.

I'm putting together a nice setup from scratch for my VW and the grad total installed is going to be about $600. That'll all the cables and a good system with XM and Ipod.

I bought a Belkin and it SUCKED.It didnt pick up jack shit for a signal so the Ipod pretty much was useless. It might pick up a signal long enough to make it through 1/2 of 1 song.I got way too pissed with it and its somewhere in the bed of my truck now.

Go for an iTrip or an iRock.I've heard good things on both.

I just set my iPod on the storage console/arm rest of my truck, no mount.
