Amazon 7 #27 October 24, 2006 I think more than anything else.. its a traditional way to celebrate the harvest festivals of old. NOW.. if you want to put a pagan spin on it.....its to show the respect to nature for a bountiful havest that will sustain you thru the long cold winter. The chuch put a religeous imprinting on it like they did so many other pagan festivals.
tbrown 26 #28 October 24, 2006 Well, first there's the trick-or-treating. I always like it and kept it up 'til I was eleven years old. Then I started taking my little sister out for hers. Loved taking both my daughters out for many years and it was fun to hang out and shoot the breeze with the other parents. Even now I love all the little spooks and Ninja Turtles who come to our door. Garrison Keillor likes Halloween because it's "a day when good people can pretend to be evil, while the rest of the year evil people pretend to be good". It's important to have a holiday that makes light of our fears. And for grownups its sexy too. Your humble servant.....Professor Gravity !
ladyskydiver 0 #29 October 24, 2006 QuoteQuoteI was just curious to find out most people's reasons for celebrating Halloween, which I am assuming stems from wanting an excuse to get dressed up in a costume. Anybody else celebrate Halloween for something other than the obvious reason? Because Jesus has two holidays and the devil only has one, I do my part to try to balance the scales. For me? I love the dressing up and hanging out with friends aspect. Plus, one of the couple's anniversary is right before Halloween so it's an additional excuse to party. Life is short! Break the rules! Forgive quickly! Kiss slowly! Love truly, Laugh uncontrollably. And never regret anything that made you smile.

Peej 0 #32 October 25, 2006 QuoteQuote I don't celebrate Halloween purely because i live in South Africa and it's an American tradition. How about Guy Fawkes? I don't celebrate that either... Although you could argue that since the gunpowder plot happened in 1605, the Guy Fawkes tradition was probably brought here when the English started arriving in SA sometime after Jan Van Riebeek landed in the Cape in 1639. At least it has some sort of connection, however vague. Halloween has f all to do with us imo. Advertisio Rodriguez / Sky
HeatherB 0 #33 October 30, 2006 QuoteIt's the eve of the day of all souls...."all hallows eve" And yes, it's fun All Saints' Day is on 11/1 All Souls' Day is on 11/2 I remember this b/c we always had mass at school on All Saints. A few hundred kids falling asleep during mass b/c we'd stayed up too late the night before and were crashing from all the sugar.
