karenmeal 0 #1 August 31, 2006 So I was backpacking this weekend.. walking down a steep trail and twisted my bad knee. Trying to self-diagnose and see if this could be worth a trip to the doctor. My knee isn't bruised.. just puffy and I have a limited range of motion. It clicks when I bend my knee to a certain point. I can't put weight on it when my knee is bent.. but I can hobble along relatively pain-free if I keep my leg straight. So what do the DZ.com doctors think? This has the potential to be shitty. I'm a packer and this is my money making season. So please tell me that you've had this and it resolved rather quickly on it's own. (Oh yeah.. am doing the RICE thing.) karenmeal 0 #5 August 31, 2006 Oh damnit... I was so confused. I thought you were referencing my awkward phrasing of doctor's visit.. I was like, do asian doctor's do house calls or something? lawrocket 3 #8 August 31, 2006 Swelling = bad Clicking = bad No weight-bearing when bent = bad Limited ROM = bad. Worth a trip to the doctor. Seriously. The doctor probably can't do anything right now except prescribe anti-inflammatories and test the ligaments, but if it's bad, you'll get an answer. You are describing my exact symptoms when I tore my ACL. I didn't think it was that bad, but it was.. My wife is hotter than your wife.

Feeblemind 1 #11 August 31, 2006 I have bad knees (4 operations on the left one alone) keep it elevated and iced and go see a doctor. It may be nothing, but then again you might have a significant injury that minor medical intervention might mitigate. If you are injured and let it go untreated you may face a more evasive procedure and onger recovery time. freeflir29 0 #12 August 31, 2006 My knees are so goofed up this is getting to be a "normal" occurence. 2 times in the last 4-6 months I have spent 2 weeks at a time hobbling. The first time this happened was in 2004. My left knee just swells up for no apparent reason. I now have a cool kneee brace that seems to do wonders though. I have seen MANY a Doc and they all say the same thing. "Yep..........the X rays look terrible but it really isn't bad enough for surgery." Only you know your body. If in doubt......go see a doc. d_squared431 0 #14 August 31, 2006 If you twisted and felt a very sharp pinch I bet it was your meniscus. Ligaments are usually the result of hyper extending your knee. You do need to go to the doctors and have it looked at. I have a yet another tear in my meniscus and my knee swells after excessive use and it goes out on me every now and then. I can't seem to bring myself to have it fixed again. Well at least not for a while longer.TPM Sister#130ONTIG#1 I love vodka.I love vodka cause it rhymes with Tuaca~LisaH You having a clean thought is like billyvance having a clean post.iluvtofly

steveorino 7 #17 August 31, 2006 I'm not a doctor (just an old SF medic) The clicking noise sounds like cartiledge issues. I'd check it out. If that is all it is -- they can scope it and and you'll be back to normal in no time. Good luck! steveOrino

idlewild70 0 #20 August 31, 2006 I put off getting my knee looked at. At times its ok, others i need to wear a knee brace. I cant pack because kneeling on it causes it to hurt for up to a week. I wish i had gone to the doc when it happened. Now i need a scope, which i am putting off til winter.-Fish Blue skies, Soft landings
karenmeal 0 #21 August 31, 2006 This is a stupid question... but I am finding a doctor to make an appointment with.. do I want an orthopedic surgeon/sports medicine doctor? NWFlyer 2 #22 August 31, 2006 QuoteThis is a stupid question... but I am finding a doctor to make an appointment with.. do I want an orthopedic surgeon/sports medicine doctor? I'd start with a sports medicine doc (not a surgeon). Generally, that's how it works - you'll get evaluated by a non-surgeon and set to a surgeon for a referral if appropriate. I've got a good guy who has offices in Ballard and Northgate - PM me if you want to schlep this far."There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please.
