matt1215 0 #1 October 28, 2006 Anyone else habitually set off the smoke detector with their cooking? I just did it broiling a steak. It wasn't so much the steak itself burning (only to m-rare), rather the spices on top. And the two 9-volt batteries I had in the junk drawer were apparently older than the ones in the smoke detectors ...soooooo... I had to go BACK out to the store and get some new ones so I didn't have to deal with the infernal beeping all night. Sounds like a good dinner, though. I'm doing rosemary lamb chops on the grill tonight. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. I was mostly burning rosemary and garlic. My smoke detectors run off house power, so batteries. I figured out quickly which breaker I need to throw to kill them, unfortunately that breaker also kills the lights in the kitchen. And yes, the smoke detector does indeed mean dinner is ready. I have been a bad homeowner and have not replaced the batteries since I bought the place 4 years ago (and it was all brand-new then). Frankly, I'm amazed they've lasted this long. I still haven't figured out how to replace the two that are on the very top of my cathedral ceilings. Guess it's time to borrow my neighbor's ladder. You'd think the builder could have installed them on a lower part of the ceiling. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. You really should replace those batteries more often . Those were some darn good batteries tho if they lasted 4 years. It does suck about the 2 you can't get at, esp from the perspective of the homeowner who has to service them. That's the first place the smoke goes when your place is on fire tho.
