Yeah, it brings up the possibility that he's been just playing the role of an incompetent coward all along, in order to cover-up his actual participation as a cold, calculating conspirator. Gosh!

The rich pact, which is set to begin in June, calls for the actor to continue on the hit Fox drama for three more years and includes a two-year development deal for Sutherland's soon-to-be-launched production banner.

Details on the deal were sketchy, but sources pegged the acting portion alone at more than $40 million for the three seasons, which could make Sutherland the highest-paid actor in a drama series.

While the deal with Sutherland locks him in for three additional years beyond the current fifth season of "24," the 20th TV/Imagine TV-produced show so far has been picked up for one additional season.

Under the pact, Sutherland also will be elevated from a co-executive producer to executive producer on "24" next season alongside Joel Surnow, Robert Cochran, Howard Gordon and Evan Katz.

The development portion of the deal is said to include overhead and a development fund for Sutherland's company. Sutherland will hire a development executive and will begin to develop and executive produce projects for television as well as the Internet and wireless devices.

Sutherland called his past five years on the show "one of the most creative and rewarding experiences in my career."

In its fifth season, "24" is enjoying some of its best ratings and critical notices. The show, which introduced the now-hot serialized thriller genre, also has become a DVD best-seller and has spawned a mobile phone series.

Sutherland's performance on "24" has earned him a Golden Globe award and four Emmy nominations.

On the big screen, he next will be seen opposite Michael Douglas and Kim Basinger in "The Sentinel" and will provide the voice of the lion in Disney's "The Wild."

1) After a steady diet of hype, people will watch ANYTHING, and
2) The two most useless things in the world are a Jell-o Vibrator and a TV critic. Not necessarily ini that order.

So Jack -now the MOST WANTED man in the country- is holed up in a bank with a gun and a hostage, being pinned down by blackbag government assassins. The cops show up, and instead of telling the cops that the guy who shot the ex-President is in there and we're going to get him out, the Feds start shooting the cops.
.............Ohhhhh Kay.......

BTW: How many innocent civilians have gotten shot because Jack had to enlist their services now? Screw my patriotic duty. If this guy showed up at my door, I wouldn't help him with a damn thing!

I noticed a Star Trek-type trend going on with the seasons on 24. The odd seasons kick ass, and the even seasons haven't been as good. I know its reverse order from the Star Trek rule of thumb, but is anyone else with me on this?

Nope- I think this season is almost as weak as Season 2. And I liked last season.

I'll admit its starting to get better, but I think we're in for another let down next week. Heller confronting the president? Its too soon- there are what? 6 hours left? My gut tells me that can only mean one thing- Heller is involved too. Last season, Jack had to torture Audrey's husband and was responsible for his death. This season he'll probably end up having to kill her father. Guess he won't be getting any at the end of the day!

Huh? He's still weak and ineffective and he's still trying to pass the blame on to other people for his screwups, which he's done ever since they introduced the character last year. "Waaahhhh, this is all YOR fault! I didn't tell you to kill David Palmer!" I don't see any major shift in his character, except maybe that he's not as dumb as people thought he was, and he's even MORE of an egomaniac than he first appeared to be (if that's even possible.)

24 has lost my interest. They have stretched things way too far. They need better writers. This season started out good then went down hill pretty fast. I really liked last season much better then this season. I am switching to that new show Theif. It has surprised me. It is a really interesting show.

I'm still watching, but not with the same enthusiasm. The writers are slipping, getting lazy and falling back on the formulas from previous seasons. I was surprised Keifer signed on for 3 more seasons because to me it seems like the concept has run its course. Jack alone against the world, doing what needs to be done and what apparently only he can do, with no regards for his own safety or happiness.

I haven't seen Thief yet because I don't want to get hooked on another show, but Andre Braugher (sp?) is an amazing actor.

Or any existing federal, state or municipal statutes, agency guidelines or Constitutional provisions. Home invasion, kidnapping, coercion, bank robbery and a pretty good case for involuntary manslaughter. And that was just the last 32 minutes.

yeah you might not want to watch Thief. I happened to catch one episode and I was very impressed with the writing. The characters are well written and the actors are doing a great job. I really like the story line so far. The direction they are taking is pretty interesting. I think it is better then 24. At least the current season.

He was so exceptional on Homicide: Life on the Street. I remember after he had the stroke on the show and how he confronted Giardello about getting back in the saddle.....so desperate and all over the place, as oppssed to the perfectly controlled person he was every other day. He has the gift.

Like when it comes to film, there are very few critics left, just reviewers. They mediate culture, there is very little bona fide criticism going on.

I agree with what most people are saying about the writing, derivitive nature of plots, and how their just isn't the "vested" feeling of last season. And it is [pretty obvious why....we know almost nothing about the characters like we did last year. There is no Bahrooz (sp?), the whole chloe and victor thingey-do (RIP). We don't KNOW or CARE about anybody this year. THAT is why it just sorta sits there.

Now, that said, I still tune in and hope...
