illegal cable:to watch or not to watch?

Recommended Posts

Ok so here to deal. A friend of ours had his cable service terminated b/c for one he was a full-time student and worked crazy hours so he wasnt home enough to watch TV much anyway.Plus if he was home he had friends over or he'd pop in a DVD so he didnt see the need for keeping the service when he only used it a few hours a week max.Its been off for about 3months +/- now.

But then last night while we,and some other friends were there getting ready to watch a movie he turns the TV on only to find that the cable service has been reconnected.WTF? So, hes basically getting free cable.Should he call the company and tell them of their screwup or not say anything and see how long the free cable lasts? (yes I know stealing cable is a crime, but he didnt do anything to pirate the cable. It was just turned back on w/o his knowledge...hes assuming a mixup at the cable co.)Also, since the service was terminated several months prior,if they send him a bill for the renewed service would he have to pay for it even though he didnt ask for the service to be reinstated?(regardless of if he watches it or not)

What would you do?

I wouldn't worry too much about the cable. I subscribe (and pay for) cable internet, and I get standard tv service without subscribing. Both services started at the same time.

I don't regard my tv service as illegal, as I haven't done anything illegal to acquire the signal. I plugged my tv into the wall and it worked.

As I read it, it seems to be the cable companies problem. Its not like he opened the cable box and "illegally" hooked himself up. They, through one screw up or another, re-connected him. Let them figure it out.

Don't screw up a good thing. If he ever needs high speed interent...get DSL. Don't ever involve the cable company again...ride the free train as long as possible:D

I have a friend who had the most basic of basic cables possible. He bough a new hi-def LCD to watch movies (he dosen't really care for anything on cable anyway). However, the digital tuner in his TV is able to recieve all the digital channels. In our area, there is no encryption. I assume, as digital ready tv's become more prevalant, the cable companies will need to start distributing Owner cards, much like satalite systems.

I'd tell your friend to make sure he's got the paperwork to prove that the service was terminated (his final bill? some sort of work order?) because it could come back to bite him in the ass if the cable company tries to bill him for it later. He'd then have easy proof that it was turned off at his request.

Yeah, he has his receipt from the cable co saying that the service was terminated and all the paperwork.

Either way, I guess it doesnt matter now.I talked to him earlier and he said it was off this morning, but then it was back on a few mins ago.So I'm sure its a glitch at the cable office and it will be off for good as soon as they figure out what the problem is.So no worries.
