I'm curious about people who post on DZ.com, and who refuse (sometimes adamently) to be identified with a name or skydiving profile. Is it more fun to have people wonder who you are, to insult someone one day, and be packing next to them the next, and they don't know who you are ? Are you someone who drove out of the parking lot when they called your name for your tandem jump, and now post as a 10,000 jump instructor ? Are you a 55 year-old whuffo mailman posting as a 20 year-old freefly girl with boyfriend problems ? Maybe you are in the Witness Protection Program and sit at your computer naked except for aluminum foil on your head so the government can't read your thoughts ? I guess we don't really know. It could be that my imagination is over-active.

I suppose it's just the nature of the i-net, and I should just get over it. I'm sure the rock climbers' forum and the knitting forum have the same issues.

some people just like anonymity. It's usually those who do the PAs and shit-stirring and never get in trouble for it because nobody knows who they are. :|

what you are completly missing are people who want to keep at least a bit of privacy on the net. there is a history of people getting into trouble for stuff they posted on dz.com, on their dz's as well as in their private life

So, let me get this straight...if I fill out my whole profile, is it acceptable for me to sit at my computer naked then?

More and more employers now will "Google" potential employees to see what comes up. The post joke someone made about Boobies might make an HR manager decide they were a Sexist or a Post about having a Beer at a Bonfire might label them as an Alcoholic to a potential employer.

There has been atleast one case of that I heard about on here where that involved one poster using profile information to report another poster to their employer for posting on this site in order to get that person fired and/or just cause general problems.:S

I don't mind being identified by a skydiving profile. "lawrocket" is what I am on this board, but I don't identify myself by that moniker in personal life. It's perhaps why I'm not recognized by people when I introduce myself. I am "lawrocket" - no act. But "lawrocket" is also an alter ego for who I really am. I don't want to be identified as "lawrocket" in the general population any more that I want to be identified by my real name or contact information on a board with almost 60,000 registered users.

I'm fairly anonymous, and I like it that way. People know what I do, where I live, and most know what I think but few know what I look like or even know what my name is. It's fairly deliberate on my part not to post much personally identifiable information because you just never know.

A few people know me better. They knew me when I jumped or have developed some level of trustworthiness wherein I believe that I can contact them. I'm not into posting my website, putting my contact information for drunk dial, or doing much of anything of that sort. I've got another life, and I choose not to be bothered.

Eh, anonymity is fine. It’s up to me how often I post and how much I say. I wouldn’t say anything out here that I wouldn’t expect everyone at the DZ to know the next weekend. So, maybe the guy packing next to me read my posts, maybe he didn’t – doesn’t really matter.

As for those people posing as something they aren’t, I figure there are probably two options. One, they are living out a fantasy and like to play at being something else for a little while, no harm done. Two, they are intentionally trying to deceive people for some reason and for those guys, I just feel sorry for them – what a sad life.

As for me, I’m pretending to be a fun, thirty-something, who is happy, hopefully a little witty and has this crazy thing about jumping out of planes… oh wait, that is who I am… SWEET!
Because life is an adventure - it may not be the one you planned, but then it wouldn't be an adventure!
