JENNR8R 0 #1 October 13, 2006 I heard on the radio this week that there was a severe shortage of blood in my area. I hadn't donated blood in years so I decided to start a new birthday tradition by taking a couple of hours off from work and "give the gift of life." At first the interview was amusing. They wanted to know things like if I had AIDS (or had sex with anyone who had), syphilis (or had sex with anyone who had), gonorrhea (or had sex with anyone who had), received a blood transfusion (or had sex with anyone who had), traveled outside the U.S. (or had sex with anyone who had), spent time in prison (or had sex with anyone who had)... In the end I came to the conclusion that only people with boring lives can donate blood. I guess that's all the more reason for me to donate regularly. What do you call a beautiful, sunny day that comes after two cloudy, rainy ones? -- Monday. BillyVance 34 #2 October 13, 2006 Last time for me was 4 years ago, and that will probably be the last time ever. That was my first donation ever too... Took me a month to fully recover from it. I just felt sooo sluggish and tired. As much as I'd like to donate, I find that my body doesn't handle it well. kenz 0 #5 October 13, 2006 i used to do it quite frequently actually.. but i had to stop because my veins started collapsing in my arms and they told me in case i needed IV's or anything i should give them a break... i figured if i can live with whats left in my body after i donate and someone could really use it, why the hell not... the past two times i donated were for people i knew, which was nice... my cousin had major open heart surgery, so she got some of the whole stuff.. then my friend who had leukemia ended up getting some of my platlets, because the bank ran out - i happened to donate there right at that time and she ended up getting them it's great thing to do for people if you can.. and if you hate needles, just turn your head when they stick ya - otherwise it really doesnt hurt"life does throw curveballs sometimes but it doesn't mean we shouldn't still swing for the homerun" ~ me

Good for you for trying. I would love to donate blood, but I am not allowed to do so. I have never weighed enough to be elgible, and the Red Cross is pretty strict about that rule. Kudos to everyone who has donated!
BillyVance 34 #7 October 13, 2006 I remember one time before I donated, a different blood bank company showed up at my company and I went in to check in... They wouldn't let me donate because they require that a sign language interpreter be present for me to donate. what the damn hell... them fuckers can write, can't they??? bob.dino 1 #9 October 13, 2006 In Australia, people that have lived in the UK can't donate blood (fear of Bovine Spongiform Encephalophy, or Mad Cow Disease). That's fine. What's not so fine is that you can't donate if you're gay or have had anal sex. WTF?
murrays 0 #10 October 13, 2006 I used to donate every 60 days but have had to stop because my wife is getting transfusions. I'll start again when she hasn't had a transfusion for 6 months. The reason for all the questions and screenings is the tragic infection of blood recipients with HIV and other diseases. In Canada it led to the Red Cross being removed several years ago and being replaced with a new entity, the Canadian Blood Services. (We don't have private blood banks like you do in the U.S.) It's all about the safety of the blood supply. My wife has had dozens of transfusions in the 14 months since she was diagnosed with leukemia.....she owes her life to blood donors. Try and make the time, it is somethng that definitely makes a difference to others.-- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

SkydiveStMarys 0 #14 October 13, 2006 The last time I donated turned into a nightmare for me. They ended up sticking me four times because half way thru the blood just stopped flowing. When asked if I had had enough I said "no it would be a waste and lets keep trying." My arm was soooo brusised, but it was a "rally" for someone in the county and I didn't want to give up. Got the job done, iced my arm for the rest of the day and said, "never again." I guess I'm not very good at it. Bobbi BobbiA miracle is not defined by an event. A miracle is defined by gratitude. Quote My guess is that the phlebotamist wasn't very good at it. I've only had one time when it was painful to give blood. I don't have any "recovery" issues either.
