Continuing in the fantasy vein His Dark Materials trilogy by Phillip Pullman is pretty awesome. I'll also add another vote for Hitchikers Guide. A couple of all time classics that are a joy to read are Jack Kerouac's On The Road about the Beat counterculture and Joseph Heller, Catch 22 - the greatest satirical work ever written - hilarious, insane and tragic in equal measure.Do you want to have an ideagasm?
