don't let them run around too much and then pour the grain to them the last three months before the freezer. Makes them real tender.:)
I'm sure we will here much more about your endeavor before they become the main course.

and by ALL means, give me more tips!!! I'm a beef raisin virgin here!

shit, do I owe beer for this, owning my first cows? :o

You can even inseminate the cow to if you want.

No thank you... I saw a vet do that to a horse once. His whole arm disappeared!!! :o

Well I sure has heck ain't letting Clay do it!!! :o

Something I didn't know... you can pay BIG BUCKS for certain "lines" of sperm or whatever they call the jizz you purchase for the insemination of your cows. It's quite a business.

Lordie. The education I'm getting out here in the country. I've got a good friend down the way who has a dairy farm. I think he'll do the dirty deed w/ the heiffers. I mean, the artificial insemination deed, not actually mounting them, sheesh!

I sure as hell ain't stickin my arm up there. crikey!

both heiffers. we're doing a little grain but they will mostly be grass fed cows.

As a girl that grew up eating grain fed beef (and the best in the world, IMHO, despite the few "angry ones" that went south recently) I'd say grain fed all the way!!!

WAY yummier!!!

But that's just me!

Oh good!... Maybe you could hook me up with him so I can milk some cows who are used to it. I'm not so sure how it would work having a virgin milker on a virgin milkee.

What do you call a beautiful, sunny day that comes after two cloudy, rainy
ones? -- Monday.

Well you could feed them some brewers grain.;) Then they'ed have beer too.

If they are 500lbs now then it shouldn't take 18mo to get them to weight. If you keep the feed to them they will be big enough sometime next summer. How are you keeping them through the winter? In a barn or out in the yard? I assume that you have some winter in IL;) so you'll need some hay as well.

it is yummier to an extent, but grain is not the natural diet for cows. you can still get a VERY tasty cow from grass feed w/ a little supplement of grain to marble them up a little w/o getting some of the yuckiness of altering their natural diet.

This is great. I love hearing about someones first time raising animals. :)
You do have someone that gave you some guidance I hope. Didn't just run to the local stockyard and go home with a couple of animals did you? [:/]

Beer can be paid at the bbq. Yes, it is owed.

Good Luck.
Scott

When I'm there for dinner, I'll decide ...

;)

Have you named them yet??? You should. ;)

My friend in Idaho named her's "Chuck" ... Sir Chuck Roast ... Charles when we felt a little "royal" ...

She had a neighbour who named their calf Bob. They kept talking about a "Bob-e-que" ...

I was thinking the same thing.;) I can see the city guy sitting in the croud bidding not knowing he is getting run up by the seller.:o Or someone talking him into a pair of runny nosed calves that will soon have a BIG vet bill.:P

Scott what do you think? I'm thinking they could be ready for the BBQ by next Labor Day.B|

jumpinfarmer and scott:

I've got a cow barn that has a pen for them. outside that there's a bigger cow lot (the farm used to be an old dairy farm 20+ years ago)... and we have 16 acres. we also have a horse barn a large silo, a grain bin, an automatic waterer, etc.

the friend of mine we bought them from, an experienced cattleman and farmer, has been helping out tremendously w/ advice and helping fix up my fences etc. Also, he cut and bailed my hay when we first bought this farm this summer. Our cow barn is FULL of hay. We're set. Plus, the pasture now has plenty of good growth now too so they won't really need much hay until winter I suppose.

Sounds like you are all set. I figured that you weren't just winging it without knowing anything, that could get real expensive fast.

oh hell no... i don't do anything w/o doing a lot of reading, research and consulting. esp. something like this. these calves are in great shape. they've had a vet check them out, been dewormed, everything.

i also spent a long time getting the farm back in top shape, ready to take livestock again. had to fix a bit of fence, make some minor building repair, etc. but now i'm ready!!! :)

I so want to visit the Dudek farm. Do you have a big tractor? I have one, but it's a pussy tractor. It's a Toro 20HP used for cutting the lawn and blowing the snow. I want to drive one of those big ass John Deere ones.

Chris

i have a tractor, but it's more like a tractorette. it's 23 horse but the thing cost as much as a new car. it's a compact tractor, a massey-ferguson GC-2300.

here's a pic... it has a front end loader too, but it's not attached in this pic (duh)

...Some people have sex with them...but they're weird.:P

:D:D:D
I posted a true story about that from my days working on a dairy farm in the distant past but I can't find it...

And no, Clay...it wasn't me as the star of the story.
My reality and yours are quite different.

I didn't read the entire thread but I'm sure there was something somewhere along the lines of you making the switch from sheep to cows...what, cows more cooperative or something?

Are they heiffers or bull calves? If they are Bulls then you had better get they nutted soon, bulls don't make tasty meat.

What are you feeding them?

Best way to denut a bull is with two bricks, just make shure to keep your thumbs out of the way or it hurts like hell:S:D:D

I love home grown (or next doors ) steak, no water content

Now you will have to sell your truck and buy a convertible cadilac so you can mount some horns on the front.

And he can wear a white suit and smoke a cigar. Then we can call him Boss Hogg.
