When you see a picture of yourself . . .

Recommended Posts

I love what I see in the mirror.:P

I'm royally critical of pictures of myself for various reasons.[:/]

It's hard to even find a normal picture of me b/c in most I'm sticking my tongue out or making a face so at least I have an excuse.:D;):P

Ok, so a follow-up question: Why the difference?

Here's a reason which I know is applicable to me, and I'd assume most others. Nobody is perfectly symmetric. Since I'm excessively analytical, I'm acutely aware of my own assymetries. My right ear sticks out further than my left, my left jaw is more square than my right, my brow is slightly slanted, etc. I grow accustomed to seeing my face one way (in the mirror). When I see it the other way (in a photograph), the assymetries are reversed.

Granted, the assymetries are small. But, when you reverse them, you double their emphasis.

Here is an example which will keep the guys' attention better than me talking about my ears. Let's talk about boobs. Assume your left boob is slightly bigger than your right boob. Your left boob is "average +1" and your right boob is "average -1" ("average" being your average size). While you are really only assymetrical by "1", when you swap those numbers, you're changing each boob size by "2", thus doubling the apparent size difference/imbalance.

I sumbit that we appear imbalanced in pictures, relative to how we see ourselves in the mirror.

Disclaimer: I know nothing about boob size unit systems (other than "I like" or "I don't like") hence the generic sizing scheme.

I have actually thought about this theory for a long time, I did not just come up with it. ;)

Here is a test. Find a picture of yourself, which you hate. Mirror it in Photoshop. See if it looks more normal.

I have not even tried that myself... now I'm curious.

I take back having ever called myself analytical.:D

;):P

I've seen pictures of myself I love, pictures I hate, and everything in-between. These days I prefer to wear minimal makeup which is beautiful in person, imo, and looks horrible in pictures.:S

I love my skin, my eyes, my lips and everything else w/out makeup. But in pictures I don't; it's like my features are lost.[:/]

I don't have photoshop.

Me neither.

My new photo editor just lets me crop, take out red eye, and a few other things like adjust the picture quality/color or make it black & white. It's actually kinda cool b/c I have some photos taken outside in the dark in which friends & I are barely visible but after the photo adjuster suddenly you can!:)

For a limited time...here's an example of both in the same photo (taken just three weeks ago).

First, before my photo editor you couldn't see either of us (except the white of our eyes) so it's kinda cool you can at least see us this well now.

Second, I'm not wearing makeup and my friend is. Look at the difference in our eyes and how well they stand out.

I don't even know what's going on with my left eye (the one on the right.;))---I'm not cross-eyed nor are my eyes uneven or shaped differently from each other, yet here's the picture.:S Oh--and why do her teeth look whiter than mine?>:(:D (They're not really.):P

That's what I mean---I can't stand pictures like this of myself.:S

But it doesn't embarras me to show it and I don't get down on myself looking at it b/c it's NOT what I see in the mirror and it's certainly not how I feel.

That's what's most important.B|

It really depends...there are some pictures I look damn good in, and there are some pictures I look like hell in. Just depends.

I usually tend to be making a fool out of myself in most pictures.

Your avatar clearly demonstrates that:P:P:P:D

Oh i have much worse. :)

I have a nasty combination of no pride and willing to do about anything to make my friends laugh. Combine that with lots of friends with cameras and if i ever run for a political office there will be plenty of black mail.
As a general rule, the better it felt when you said it, the more trouble it's going to get you into.

And people wonder why I run from cameras. :D

If you're feeling shy, just make a funny face for the camera instead of running from it. It'll make you feel better, and I've discovered running only encourages the evil photo-takers more.:D

Or could I just hold it up in front of a mirror? I don't have photoshop.

You try it and report back. ;)

Yes, a mirror would work. :P

And all you need is MS Paint. Flip image horizontally.

I don't have many pics of myself here, but I just tried it with one I found, and I think the theory definitely has some merit. It looked much better (more normal) reversed, IMO. This test will work best with photos where you're looking straight at the camera.

What photo editor? I'd be willing to bet it can flip the image... as I pointed out above, even MS Paint can.
