The Proper Gear Care Thread

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

After having a rig for a while, it's occurred to me that during training, most skydivers never get trained in how to properly take care of their gear.

The most I'd ever heard was "keep it out of the sun."

Then, over the winter I left it in my sub-zero car for about a week, and when I brought it in for a repack I asked about it -- apparently, you shouldn't do that.

Then, today, before really thinking about it, I threw my rig into my closet fairly hard, and after I heard it hit, I thought -- oops, that might not have been a good idea. I checked everything, and from the outside it all looked OK.

Is it? We need some training on how to properly take care of a rig.

What are the key DON'Ts?

What are the DO's?

Experienced riggers, and others, please advise! :)

I thought not THROWING your rig around was common sense, but I guess not.;)

I don't do anything to my rig that I wouldn't do to my girlfriend.

-I don't leave it in the car... it is either too hot or too cold in there, and some one might steal her.

-I don't kick, throw, slam, or hit it.

-I don't leave it in the sun, if the packing area has partial shade I put the canopy in the dark part and put my jump suit over my rig.

-I try not to let her get rained on.

-I don't lend her to other people.

:ph34r::D;)

Make sure you haven't dislodged any handles or pins. If you have an AAD, throwing your rig around isn't the best thing for a device that just might be needed to save your life.

I did make sure all the handles and pins were in good order. As far as the Cypres, what could be damaged this way, and is there a way to check? Would the countdown on startup detect any problems?

If it goes through the start up sequence successfully, it should be fine.

What he said.
Coming from a rigger, I'd jump it. I mean, what could possibly go wrong?

...ok but really, if you're concerned about any portion of the harness/container system, just ask your local rigger to take an overview of it. Main checkpoints are the harness attachments, container basics (ie: ripcord, closing loop, etc), main pin, cypres or AAD.
Knowledge is power.
