How many of you are military?

Recommended Posts

JROTC (Navy) in high school
ROTC (Army) in college...well, until I got mono and had to drop out...[:/]

Joined the Army in '92, 31C which then was a Radio Operator, Signal Corps...3 years in. Ended as an E-4 Specialist...(missed the Corporal slot by a hair).

Cool stuff...not much really, Haiti was heating up...the Gulf was still hot territory...Western Washington burned and burned (we helped FEMA with communications with the smokejumpers and others :)
Best thing that happened during that time was a blind date with a Ranger (that I TOTALLY protested...my barracks-mate had to drag me kickin' and screaming...)-that Ranger and I will celebrate our 10 year wedding anniversary this July. :)
Oh yeah, definitely worth it. Wouldn't have traded it for anything!

A poll such as this usually suffers from sampling error.

Because someone who has never been in the military would probably glance at the title of the thread and not bother to click on it, because it has nothing to do with him/her.

u.s. navy............5 years............boiler tech,

highest annual salery in the navy $18,500.

annual salery 1st year out.........$52,000.

I'm all about serving your country but the pay sucks!

you arent kidding...i pay some poor E6's salary in taxes every month....

the military should be something people are competing to be accepted into, the best and brightest to defend our liberties, unfortunately far to often its a 'well what else is there' option....[:/]

I am on active duty and have been for 19 + years. I'm so close to retirement I can taste it. Been to Airborne school, survival school, and been to 5 of the 7 continents. It has been a long road but it has been worth it.

I hate to burst your bubble but you are not going to get paid to skydive in the Army. If you consider static line jumping "skydiving" then I guess you could say that. The only people who actually "skydive" are those on HALO status and are drawing HALO pay. Your chances of achieving that are slim to none depending on your MOS field.

You're right. But I'm sure I don't have to remind many of you how the Army can take anything that should be fun and make it either long and drawn out or turn it into work. That is my point.

Congradulations.

I tried twice.

First time I made it to the jacket. Then they sent me back to my unit to get more Army time.

Second time I was injured before I went to tryouts...That didn't go well.

I don't regret my Army time....And I ended up getting out with a 50% disability.

I worked with the 1 Kings Regiment in Kuwait back in 1997, good group of guys. Their chain of command didn't care to much for me taking their enlisted in to the Kuwaiti's officer mess. "Screw them if they can't take a joke."

1974 - 1978, combat engineer (minefields, demolition, infantry). also spent time as a gunner on a CEV - Combat Engineer Vehicle. Trained in Ft Leonard Wood MO, 3 yrs Germany as part of 3AD (now shut down) and then finished up at Fort Ord CA near Monterey (also now shut down). Bad morale back then, lots of drug and race problems. But I'm glad I did my time - overall it was a good thing.

This is a responsibility that I will take seriously, because people can die if do something stupid. So any good advice from some SNCO's will be much appreciated.
