House paint!

Recommended Posts

Ok I know there are people out here that can give me some good advice.

I am starting to look at painting the condo some other color then offwhite. I have a general idea of colors, but there are a bunch of different paint companies. Living room is going to be a sage, along with part of the kitchen. Bedroom is going to probably be lavender.

Which paint company is going to give me the best coverage?

We did our house mostly with Behr (Home Depot), and got good one-coat coverage of dark over off-white. We used Valspar or something like that (Lowe's) in one room and it sucked. But it was a pale yellow over white, so it was more likely to suck.

BTW -- I'm assuming you mean interior, not exterior.

Why would you want to paint with some other color then off white? Won't it bleed through?

The walls need some color! everything in that place is freaking offwhite....

I have had the best luck with:
Kelly Moore
Benjamin Moore
Behr
Frazee

All are more expensive than Home Depot cheap brand, but much better pigments.

Proper prep work makes the final product look and last better.

Ok that causes me to think about another question. IF the walls are clean and off white now. This is brand new construction and this stuff was painted about 6 months ago. I got into contract after the place was built, so it has base colors.

Anyway do I still need to primer the walls even if they are already a light color and clean?

As long as they are clean, you should be fine. I thought you might have been doing some exterior as well. Just take a clean rag on the end of a broom to wipe down the walls to get the dust off. You should be good to go.

We oops,:$ i mean Fireflytx just finished painting my house. She used primarily Behr paints and glazes. She did part of the kitchen in Ralph Lauren river rock too. The behr went on very well and virtually everything was a one coat application over white/offwhite walls.

Never look down on someone, unless they are going down on you.

I don't think you'll need to use primer. Depending on the color, you may need to do a second coat though.

I've used Behr paint in the past and have had good luck with it. I believe it has gotten good reviews in Consumer Reports too. I saw a sale flyer in my area that said it is 25% off at Home Depot this weekend.

No baby you did help a bit.

The color we did the Kitchen is Ralph Lauren River River Rock Prarie Fire. It is a nice sagey green color. Faux finishing looks great but can be a big pain in the ass. Just go to the Behr section in Home Depot and it is all spelled out for you right there. I also used some glidden paint. I didn't primer anything even where I spilled Wine all over the wall. i just gave it a good once over after the first coat.

I am so sick of painting I think if I have to paint anymore I am going to vomit.

A lot of the smaller paint stores actually provide better deals and paints than the Home Depots and Lowes of the world.

I'd recommend visiting a few places. When you get your paint, paint a swatch of it in the wall and let it dry. Then see how well it covered. If it looked like it needed help, then go back and sand over everything or prime it. (I found it to be a bitch to get a good coat over enamel ).

Finally - think of how much time you think it will take to paint. Multiply that by three to get a better idea of how long it will take.

We did our house (mostly) last year. It really didn't take all that long; the walls were in decent shape, so we just moved furniture, covered stuff, and dug in. We used a Warner Power Roller; it helped, but the person using it kind of likes painting, and doesn't mind cleaning it up at all. He did all the rolling, and I did most of the finish work. In an evening after work, we could do about 1/2 a room pretty easily, including a decent dinner.

Use decent brushes and rollers, and clean them really well between days. That way you don't end up making more trips to the store because you couldn't keep painting the next day.

It's satisfying in a way, because when you're done, you can really tell the difference. All that's left for us is the trim, which I'm chicken to start on :P

Best way to paint cabinets is with a HVPL sprayer(high volumn-low pressure). Puts on an even spray with almost no overspray. Gets into all the nooks and crannies. Makes cabinets a breeze.

I worked for a painter and can put a lot of paint up fast. Just hate doing it.

I have almost finished painting my entire house. I have to say that the Ralph Lauren Faux finishes are GREAT! I have used the suede and the River Rock, but they are time consuming. The Behr paint has been my favorite satin for the money, and the Glidden sucked!! I have used very deep colors, and other than painting over the kitchen wallpaper, have not used a primer.

A tip that I learned... if you are going to be painting for several evenings in a row, don't clean the brushes/rollers, wrap them tightly with a trash bag and put them in the fridge! This also works with staining, as I have built a lot of wooden units lately.
Painting is fun! Don't be afraid to go bold and have fun!! We even did a skydiving themed guest room with bunk beds and rig racks. The walls are bright primary colors with sqaures all over them. It was a blast!!

Renee,
Look for a place that sells odds and ends from construction guys. We have one here in town and I can't believe the cost of things there. Paint there is very cheap and brand names.

I do quite a bit of painting in my work, and enjoy the hell out of it. I think it's sort of a Zen thing.

Get some high quality brushes, put your mind on cruise, and play with the paint. What a way to spend the day.

PPG paint has been great for us.

They sell it under the following names:

Pittsburgh Paint
Monarch Paint
Porter Paint

Good luck painting your condo. We painted our house about 7 months ago. We used an orange in the dining room and a olive brown in the living room. I was sceptical before it went up, but it looked great.

I have found Benjamin Moore to be quality paint and very easy to work with.

Chris

Edit to add another thought: Don't skimp on your supplies such as rollers and paint brushes. It will only make the job harder and more time consuming. It isn't worth the few bucks you save. I also buy plenty of roller covers and just chuck them. I don't bother with cleaning them. The 3M blue tape is the bomb-diggity!:)

I used to try to wash the roller covers out but it took forever so now I just chuck them. I also like the disposable pan liners and the handy disposable things that are for cutting in. Those are great for keeping paint from hitting the ceiling!
