Have you ever been on a "Retreat"?

Recommended Posts

If so, how long was it and what was it like?

There are many retreats here in Florida as well as in Arizona...where you go for a week or two, without cell or laptop, there's weight loss involved, whole body cleansing, exercising, meditation, etc...

Any experiences and insight would be greatly appreciated.

I looked into them for the wife until I realized that having our son is incompatible with a retreat any time soon.

Each one is different. Some are more for relaxation while others are straight outta boot camp. Come to think of it, I guess you can consider my basic training to be a "retreat." Weight loss, exercise, and mind-fucking, all at the same time!

Yeah...........every time I go to my house in Montana. ;)

Your cabin?
Damn...I miss Colorado so very much. When I had a decision to make, I used to drive up to Greys and Torreys or Mount Evans...or Longs Peak and just make my trek to just think...things became very clear and I came back with resolve and assurance that my decision was solid. Now I'm here at sea level and perhaps a walk along the beach could do the same...but it's just not as solid as what I had there in Colorado. I feel like a trip to AZ or retreat down here is much needed...

I call it backpacking... but I haven't done it recently...

allthough my families cottage in Michigan is kind of like a retreat like that... I get spotty coverage because the cell phone occasionally tries to connect to the towers on the other side of lake michigan... we don't have any tvs up there (and I've never wanted for one while there...) and although I'll take my computer I generally spend my time doing stuff outdoors (like canoing, walking up and down the beach, or biking...) The evenings are usually spent catching up on my reading...

Yeah weight loss would be an added benefit...

I saw those pictures of you in the Hustler uniform. I don't think you need it.

Thanks but this is the biggest I've ever been and several .commers/friends at my dz have voiced that I need to do something.

How sweet of your friends. :S[:/] Unless you've put on a LOT of weight since I saw you in May, you're nowhere near an unhealthy weight and as far as I'm concerned that would be the only reason true friends should be telling you you need to lose weight.

That said, if you feel like you want to lose some weight to feel better about yourself, feel healthier, etc, that's cool. Do it because you want to do it not because some "friend" says you should.

Also, don't go into a retreat like this thinking it'll be a quick fix, instead think of it as something that can build healthy or healthier habits to last a lifetime.

Losing weight's not the hard thing; keeping it off is the hard thing. I've found that out the hard way - once I started slipping back to some old habits after 18+ months of new habits, the weight comes right back on. It's a lifetime thing, not a one or two week thing.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

So what? My son is the biggest he's ever been, too.

First off, that's messed up. Saying you "need" to do something? If you want to, then do it. But letting other people say that you need to lose weight is as screwed up as getting someone a self-help book for Christmas...

They should support your decisions - not tell you what they think you "need" to do.[:/]

I agree with this COMPLETELY!

While I've never me RkyMtnHigh, the pics that you post ... wow, girl! You look AMAZING!!! Don't change a thing! Unless YOU want to!

Do what you want 'cause you want to ... and I'll talk to Stacey about this ... I'll get HER opinion on what you look like! ;)

Just 'cause someone says you should change, don't mean it's right!

You look pretty good to me!

I guess this sounds like some kind of a "fat farm" retreat. I was thinking more of the spiritual kind. Those aren't usually more than 2 - 3 days at most, but can be intense. You get up early, go to bed fairly late and spend a lot of the day in prayer or in different workshop groups. They can be a really good thing, though you have to keep in mind tat the people who run them are skilled in bringing about a desired result. Which is not necessarily bad either, so long as you're aware of what's going on. The desired result may be the reason you're going in the first place. I haven't been on one since I was a teenager, but they have them for singles, married couples, men, women, you name it. I think a few days devoted to prayer and relfection can be good for people, especially in this world we live in.

If you want to get away and cleanse your mind, body and soul, save some money and just rent a cabin somewhere, like up in the NC mountains. When I went up there in July, I didn't have any cell or internet connection. It was great! It's an easy drive, bring books you've been wanting to read, there are plenty activities to do and you control which food gets put into your cabin. We went hiking, canoeing, swimming in water falls, rock climbing and white water rafting. There's definitely enough things you can do in that area that will make you feel refreshed and empowered.

I think before we can reach any decisions on whether or not weight loss is "needed", we'll need to see updated photographs, preferrably nudes.

Seriously though, weight loss and size are a personal decision. I myself am the biggest I have ever been, and those who know me, know that I have always been a big boy. I know that I'd be healthier if I lost weight, and I know that I'd be happier too. But, I cannot seem to motivate myself to do anything about it. If your 10 pounds heavier than "normal" and your friend are pointing it out, maybe they just don't want to see you heading down a road of 20, 30, 40... It's alot easier to nip it in the bud early than it is to sit down and say "Fuck, I need to lose 100+ pounds!".... Now if they just enjoyed seeing you run around the DZ in a bikini and suddenly your wearing one peices because you put on 2 pounds, there just idiots.

Hey, hon!

I've never been on a retreat, but the best time that I've had was going into the mountains in a place that had crappy reception and climbing the waterfalls and just enjoying nature. Rent a cabin, grab a book, and enjoy nature.

As for your weight, what were your personal feelings about it BEFORE someone said something? (Rhetorical...you don't have to answer it.) Lose weight if and only if it's what you want to do NOT because someone else says that you need to.

And, I know you...I seriously doubt that you're overweight. You're a tall woman and had a great body the last time I saw you. Somehow, I'd be surprised if that changed much if at all.

Agreed...this world has gotten out of hand, somehow, and in my prayers, Clay and others like him in harm's way, are at the top of my list.

It was a great get away from the rush of life. What with school starting, I so needed some girlfriend time with a close friend. Best retreat in the world. Hey, I just noticed, retreat had the word "treat" in it. How nice, it was a treat to get away;)
