Ron 10 #1 August 25, 2006 A real legend....Gone Best know for the song "Gonna Fly now" (Rocky Theme song). But he had a really great version of Admiral's Horn and even covered Sesame Street on his record "Storm". I saw him live once at BB' Kings place in Memphis...Amazing http://musicstore.connect.com/album/856/Maynard-Ferguson/This-Is-Jazz-16/500000000000002331559.html"No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers,
AggieDave 6 #2 August 25, 2006 Oh man this really sucks! I've been playing trumpet for about 15 years now and since the beginning I've looked up to Maynard in my playing. QuoteBest know for the song "Gonna Fly now" (Rocky Theme song). I would have said for Danny Boy, Superbone Meets the Badman, Gospel John, Birdland, Chameleon and his version of Hey Jude LONG before Gonna Fly Now. That's just me, though. Atleast I got to see him in concert a few years ago in Austin. He just flat out looked old and kinda frail even then, he still picked up his horn and played better than a large number of professional players can who are still in their prime.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." usedtajump 1 #4 August 25, 2006 Saw Maynard way back in 1964 at North Texas State University (now UNT) in Denton, TX. Won't be another one like that again. Man, could that guy hit some high notes. RIP The older I get the less I care who I piss off.
TheAnvil 0 #5 August 25, 2006 I saw Maynard live several times. What a loss for the music world - and for all of his fans too. RIP Vinny the Anvil Post Traumatic Didn't Make The Lakers Syndrome is REAL JACKASS POWER!!!!!!
motorheaddown 0 #6 August 25, 2006 Yeah... my brother called about the bad news. I've heard Maynard a couple of time - most memorable with at the World Series of Jazz at Disney World around '77. His band and Stan Kenton's band were the featured groups - what a night. My all time favorite songs are "Give it One" and "Free Wheeler". I think both are on MF Horn 3 or 2... RIP Maynard! -scott
AggieDave 6 #7 August 26, 2006 Well, if we're lucky Scott Englebright will release a tribute album. He's the guy who played lead on the Return to Birdland album.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."
Rookie120 0 #8 August 26, 2006 Oh man! This sucks. I saw Maynard 4 times in concert. The last was about a year down here in Baton Rouge. He put on one hell of a show and was an amazing horn player. He was one of the greats and he will be missed. If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck!
