JustaBill 0 #1 August 22, 2006 man do I feel like an idiot. Having my son do some practice math problems and I forget the order of operations as far as parenthesis etc go. If there aren't any parenthesis do you just go left to right with each operation or do you do the multiplication or division first. 6+5x4-7 is that 6+5=11, 11x4=44, 44-7=37. Or is it 5x4=20, 20+6=26, 26-7=19? I'm thinking the 2nd one is the right one but for the life of me I can't remember for sure and I hate to teach him wrong. There is an order of precedence of operations: Exponents Negation (-) Multiplication and division Addition and subtraction The short version is do all the exponents then do all the negatives, then do multiplication and division, then add the results going from left to right. Nightingale 0 #6 August 22, 2006 I learned the mnemonic "Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally" which stood for Parentheses Exponents Multiplication, Division Addition, Subtraction. Since division is really multiplication (18 divided by 2 is the same as 18 times one half), and subtraction is really addition (you're not subtracting... you're adding a negative number. one minus one is the same as one plus negative one), you do division in the same step as multiplication, left to right, and same with addition and subtraction.
