Help me teach my son math

Recommended Posts

man do I feel like an idiot. Having my son do some practice math problems and I forget the order of operations as far as parenthesis etc go. If there aren't any parenthesis do you just go left to right with each operation or do you do the multiplication or division first. 6+5x4-7 is that 6+5=11, 11x4=44, 44-7=37. Or is it 5x4=20, 20+6=26, 26-7=19? I'm thinking the 2nd one is the right one but for the life of me I can't remember for sure and I hate to teach him wrong. Thanks for the help guys.

There is an order of precedence of operations:

Exponents
Negation (-)
Multiplication and division
Addition and subtraction

The short version is do all the exponents then do all the negatives, then do multiplication and division, then add the results going from left to right.

For example, 6+5x4-7 = 6 + 20 - 7 = 19.

I learned the mnemonic "Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally" which stood for

Parentheses
Exponents
Multiplication, Division
Addition, Subtraction.

Since division is really multiplication (18 divided by 2 is the same as 18 times one half), and subtraction is really addition (you're not subtracting... you're adding a negative number. one minus one is the same as one plus negative one), you do division in the same step as multiplication, left to right, and same with addition and subtraction.

I do not know what negation is....but here is what I teach my students:

P arentheses (from the inside out if there is more than one set)
E xponents
MD Multiplication and division as you come to it from left to right
AS Addition and subtraction from left to right

Mnemonic: Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally.

Thanks guys, I learned something tonight. Well relearned anyway. I appreciate the help. He struggles in math as it is and I hate to steer him the wrong way.

Since you already got your answer, I will just share with you that I feel your pain. I had to relearn long division again a couple of years ago and all my multiplication facts!

They teach new and different tricks to check your work today as well that has me going "huh" as well.

Keep up the good work! :)

Wouldn't it be easier to hire a tutor?
Kallend comes to mind here....

We have hired a tutor, but at 8pm it's tough to get a hold of her, so I did the next best thing B|
