wildman2231 0 #53 August 15, 2006 Nothin against SaaB. But parts and maintenance will hurt you pocketbook. I like Volvos and mercedez also. The best mileage in the world won't put brake pads on em for 14 dollars though. and if your in the states...those 14 dollar brake pads become 140 dollars real easy. I've changed many of them. Not knocken em,just a little frugal. Get what makes you happy if you can afford it! I've changed alot of brakes and other misc. for many friends. (from a family of over the road proffessional drivers). Get a bright red one and drive with the top down I'll fix it for you if you come jump with me!I'm fine...crazy people don't know they're crazy...No,Really! Amazon 7 #55 August 15, 2006 QuoteChick that is the most word thing you've said eva! I just passed 480k on my yota. It will not die. Yeah but that thing is SOOOOO NOT Southern Cal cool
Michele 1 #56 August 15, 2006 Jeanne, it's not about SoCA cool - it's about what I want to drive; I love driving, and can't stand to be in a car that I don't like....especially if the urge to drive until I decide to stop overtakes me (usually at midnight, when I can't sleep). Updating. While I adore the way the Saab handles and looks, after oodles of research and talking to several different mechanics, my father was very happy to hear that I've decided to not get it. Sigh. It's just not financially feasible at the moment, you know? So now I've been looking at the Solara, and while it isn't exactly what I want (i.e. it's automatic v. manual...and I love the stick), it will do for the next few years. Besides, it makes Pop happy, and that's a good thing. Now, just to find a Solara that a) I can afford, and b) that I like. And that is going to be difficult at best, as Dad's mechanic says to get a 2004 or newer (body style change, as well as some mechanical differences make the +2004 a better car than -2004 models). Back at it. Man, this just sucks. There are quite a few other things which need attention, but all are on hold until I can get a car that I can trust. Amazon 7 #60 August 15, 2006 QuoteJeanne, it's not about SoCA cool - it's about what I want to drive Uh I was talking about Vector Boys ride......I have been there BUT it did get me from point A to Point B.... Michele... you gotta admit... SoCal does have a certain level of importance placed on what you drive... Yeah.. what he said... above.. get another Jetta... get a TDI.. its like 50 MPG
Michele 1 #61 August 15, 2006 I'd love to get another Jetta...but they stopped making them, and my Dad's mechanic (apparently he's the God of Mechanics) told Dad that parts will become more and more scarce as time goes on, and that VWs have electrical issues (as I am discovering...). I was considering a 2002 Cabrio GLX (I think), but Dad really wants me in a Toyota, Honda, or something with that sort of staying power. So, at least that limits my choices. Besides I also have a jeep and a buell to realign me with the SoCal sensibilities. Confession: I'm just on a mission to make it to one million miles and then we are going to push it out of a skyvan... if Skyvans exist when I get there. Confession#2 close personal friends and family are actually hostile to the fact I still have the yota and it runs good. Mechanic friends say I owe japanese "mo money". zoobrothertom 5 #63 August 16, 2006 Most of the comments have been positive. So, let me slip in one item to ponder. "Turbo" + "Turbo out of warranty" = "Big $$ at some unknown point in the near future" No, really, I like the boost!Good luck and have fun! ____________________________________ I'm back in the USA!! Michele 1 #65 August 16, 2006 So I caved and got a Honda. Good, used 2005. 14,300 miles on it, so still in the breaking in period (well, sorta). It wasn't what I started out looking for, but hey, sometimes you just bite the bullet. And they did take the Jetta in trade, too. I drove an Accord for years, and I loved it, so why not? I think I'll enjoy it, though. It's got some nice features. I'll get it on Friday, and get some photos up. Only 4 cylinders, and not turbo, but hey, it's a bit sporty nonetheless. And yes, there's a negotiation story, too...and the fact that on the test drive, we ran out of gas (that helped the negotiation along...). Thanks for all the advice, and the help. I appreciate it very much; and while it's not the Saab, I think I'll be all right for a few years. Then, maybe, I'll be able to get a really spiffy machine. 'Til then, I'll drive the Honda. It's a far cry from the Jetta, but then again, the Jetta has gasped it's last...but I'll miss it. Miss it very much. MikeMcLean 0 #67 August 18, 2006 I don't have the redline model, the regular Sky with over 10k miles already. It's a sweet car and worth the cost and the watiing time :)It wouldn't hurt you to think like a fucking serial killer every once in a while - just for the sake of prevention
