piisfish 140 #1 August 10, 2006 this might be temporary.. but not only parachutes.. any hand luggage... QuoteAlert at UK Airports Media Statement 10 August 2006 Following this mornings police action, the Department for Transport have asked all UK airports to apply additional security measures designed to ensure passenger safety. These measures will prevent passengers from carrying hand luggage into the cabin of an aircraft with the following excepts (which must be placed in a plastic bag): pocket size wallets and pocket size purses plus contents (for example money, credit cards, identity cards etc (not handbags)) travel documents essential for the journey (for example passports and travel tickets) prescription medicines and medical items sufficient and essential for the flight (e.g. diabetic kit), except in liquid form unless verified as authentic spectacles and sunglasses, without cases contact lens holders, without bottles of solution for those travelling with an infant: baby food, milk (the contents of each bottle must be tasted by the accompanying passenger) sanitary items sufficient and essential for the flight (nappies, wipes, creams and nappy disposal bags) female sanitary items sufficient and essential for the flight, if unboxed (eg tampons, pads, towels tissues (unboxed) and/or handkerchiefsand wipes) keys (but no electrical key fobs) All passengers must be hand searched, and their footwear and all the items they are carrying must be x-ray screened. Pushchairs and walking aids must be x-ray screened, and only airport-provided wheelchairs may pass through the screening point. In addition to the above, all passengers boarding flights to the USA and all the items they are carrying, including those acquired after the central screening point, must be subjected to secondary search at the boarding gate. Any liquids discovered must be removed from the passenger. BAA wish to stress that these are precautionary measures. During the next few days airports will be extremely busy, therefore only those intending to fly should come to the airport. Passengers are also asked to use public transport to get to and from the airport wherever possible. Passengers are asked to be patient while these additional security measures are put in place. Delays are likely and passengers are therefore asked to allow extra time for their journey. piisfish 140 #4 August 10, 2006 U.K., U.S.: Update: Flights to Britain canceled after authorities foil terror plot 10-Aug-2006 08:25:06 AM (GMT) FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) _ European carriers canceled flights Thursday to Britain, where airports were experiencing massive delays after authorities said they thwarted a terrorist plot to blow up aircraft in flight. Heathrow airport, the busiest airport in Europe, was closed to most European flights. The block on incoming traffic applied to flights of three hours or less, an airport spokesman said. Congestion was building up rapidly as authorities enforced strict new regulations banning most hand baggage. Passengers faced delays as tighter security was hastily enforced at the country's airports and additional measures were put in place for all flights, and British Airways said some flights were likely to be canceled. British authorities said they thwarted a terrorist plot to blow up ``a number of aircraft'' in mid-flight between the United States and Britain using explosives smuggled in hand luggage. Terrorists aimed to ``bring down a number of aircraft through mid-flight explosions, causing a considerable loss of life,'' Home Secretary John Reid said. Police arrested a number of people in London after an operation that lasted several months, but did not immediately say how many. The Department of Transport said passengers would not be allowed to carry any hand baggage on board any aircraft departing from any airport in the country. Laptop computers, mobile phones, iPods, and remote controls were among the items banned from being carried on board. Prescription medicines were permitted; as were eyeglasses but not their cases, the department said. Contact lenses could be taken aboard in their cases, but bottles of solution were banned. Passengers were also advised that no electrical or battery powered items including laptops and mobile phones could be carried into the cabin. The U.S. government raised its threat assessment to the highest level for commercial flights from Britain to the United States. German carrier Lufthansa said its morning and early afternoon flights to Britain were canceled because of ``logistical and not security'' reasons. No other Lufthansa flights were affected. Spain's Iberia said it had canceled four flights to Heathrow in total, and Italian carrier Alitalia stopped six flights through London _ four linking the city with Rome and two with Milan. Alitalia said it would decide later Thursday whether to continue the cancelations. ``For now, all flights to London Heathrow have been canceled,'' a Brussels international Airport official said. Editor's Note Airline disruptions Those planning to travel by air to or from this destination should check with their airline or travel agent immediately to reconfirm travel arrangements. If your flight has been canceled, request the next available flight. Traffic on roadways leading to airports may be considerably slower than normal. Airports are likely to become very crowded, and lines will be long. Allow a good measure of extra time to get to the airport, check in and go through security.scissors beat paper, paper beat rock, rock beat wingsuit - KarlM

The inflight system can only hold attention for so long, I don't drink, and flight attendants are all chosen based on experience and seniority these days, not looks like they should be. Except with a British accent, which, for some obscure reason, some US chicks still fall for... Go figure.
