freekflying04 0 #1 August 14, 2006 I've been training for a triathlon in Keller for a week now, and I just thought i'd see who all likes the 3somes on here. I'm on the 10 week schedule so i should be in top shape by oct 20th which is when the event is. Not really looking to place, or anything, but just finish somewhere in the middle of the pack. I'm trying to focus more on the swimming then anything else, my swimming SUCKS. The running and biking aint no thing, in fact I'm positive i could do a half Ironman bc 56 miles of biking and 13 miles of running doesnt really bother me, but its the 1.6 miles of swimming that makes me go ERRRRR... SLIDER 0 #2 August 14, 2006 I have done quite a few - What distance have you done in the past, and how many? Is the one your training for a half? All the distances can be done fairly easy by themselves but togther can be a bit of a struggle. Is it a lake or ocean swim? wetsuit legal or not ? It will make a difference. freekflying04 0 #3 August 14, 2006 its actually a reverse tri.. its a 5k run, 15 mile bike, and 400 yard swim. I've done a 350 m swim, 2.6 mile run and 9 mile bike pretty easily.. the swimming part sucked though. I'm thinkin it'll be nice to do the reverse though, at least the water wont be so crowded. (btw, it'll be in an indoor pool :) ) so wetsuits arent an issue at all. I think thats the only one for the rest of the year that i'm going to do.. I'm moving to NY in december. depending on how well i do i might see about maybe getting some minor sponsorship.. I work for a city gym, and have already generated an enormous amount of new membership, so if nothing else i should be able to get priority on the treadmills and a lane in the pool whenever i need it. We'll see what happens! Edit: There is a half Ironman though very close to my hometown in north houston at the end of October but i just think thats way too much for me to train for.. I'd love to try it but i'd hate to not be able to finish? do you think maybe i should just nut up and do it or just stick to the reverse tri.. I've never done anything like that with those kind of distances combined.

(btw, it'll be in an indoor pool :) ) I've done exactly one triathlon in my life, and it was exactly those lengths and order and the swimming was in an indoor pool as well. With my running background, it wasn't that hard but I didn't care for the swimming part. The only positive was that we got to cool off at the end... SLIDER 0 #5 August 14, 2006 Just keep training and doing some sprint and olympic distances. After those, you'll know when your ready to go longer. Set some long term goals, make a training plan, talk to some who have all ready finished longer races and then go for it !! It's a addicting - Just like this sport Scott ________________________________"there's a fine line between hobby and mental illness"
simplyputsi 0 #6 August 14, 2006 I've done 3 sprint tris this year and am doing my 4th this weekend. The distances are 600m swim, around 12-14 mile bike and then a 5 k. You are smart to focus on your swim. If you have not competitively swam before though you might not be where you want by october 20th. It's not about how far you swim when you train but rather your technique. As you get your technique down then add more distance. If I could knock my swim time down to where it should be I would have a chance of placing in my age group, however I just can't seem to swim when it comes to the race, well and I'm not so great in the pool either. Good for you for getting out there. You will want to do another one after this.Skymama's #2 stalker -
freekflying04 0 #7 August 14, 2006 yeah i'm just gonna do the reverse tri this year then i'll just work on getting a nice base over the winter and then i'll try and hit up a couple of the triathlons in NY next year. i'll probably have to invest in a mountain bike to get any training in over the winter though haha. simplyputsi 0 #8 August 14, 2006 nooooooooooo don't get a mountain bike ahhhhhhhhhhh. just get an indoor trainer. Cheaper than a mountain bike, but boring as shiznit. A trainer will help you with your endurance though. Get on it, pop in a movie and go to it. Also if you do this make sure you have a fan blowing on you as you will heat up fast with no movement. Cycle ops makes some pretty good trainers. You'll just have to find a tire to put on the back wheel you don't care for since the trainer will ruin your tire. Lucky me in GA I can go almost all winter riding outside. I hate the cold rides though, hate them!!!Skymama's #2 stalker -
