skymama 37 #1 August 11, 2006 Bobbi's book thread made me wonder where everyone is getting their books these days. My last purchase was a last-minute book I picked up while I was at Target. It cost $13, I finished it in 2 days and it made me think I really should start going to the Library more to save a little money because I'm not big on rereading my books anyway. My boyfriend loves to read, but he told me he doesn't even have a library card. Does anyone still go to the Library? I'm going to make a point of going this weekend! She is Da Man, and you better not mess with Da Man, because she will lay some keepdown on you faster than, well, really fast. ~Billvon
bbarnhouse 0 #2 August 11, 2006 I buy a lot of my books online, but we do have a "library" of sorts here on the DZ so we share as well. Our tram driver Tom is probably one of the most well read people I know. He reads about a book a day.
Icon134 0 #3 August 11, 2006 ok... I'm a dork but I just love used bookstores... I would much rather fill my library (which could always stand to be larger... ) with used books then new ones.Livin' on the Edge... sleeping with my rigger's wife... popsjumper 2 #9 August 11, 2006 I can't remember the last book I bought. Friends and family trades works well for me. But unlike you, I re-read books all the time. I've read some books into the double-digits: - Lord of the Rings - Stranger in a Strange Land - Foundation series and many others. My reality and yours are quite different. DJL 235 #10 August 11, 2006 I'm pretty bad about this too. I should do library or Ebay but I end up buying stacks of books and audio books on an impulse and end up with a $200 shopping bag."I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher
SkydiveStMarys 0 #11 August 11, 2006 Too funny...you beat me to my next thread. I have a family member that works at the local library..thats where I get most of my books. If there is one in particular that I love and I think is a "keeper" I will buy it for my bookshelf. BobbiA miracle is not defined by an event. A miracle is defined by gratitude. 2fat2fly 0 #12 August 11, 2006 Traditional bookstores and online-some loaners. I cruise used book stores but I've had 3 or 4 go out of business owing me because I have a hard time finding books there in the genres that I like.I am not the man. For better or for worse, yeah. With a typical novel-type paperback, I'll usually go through it in 2-4 hours depending on print size and length. Something like Without Remorse, by Tom Clancy, that'll take closer to 6+ hours. I did the unabridged version of The Stand by Stephen King in about 10 hours.cavete terrae. misskriss 0 #15 August 11, 2006 I used to take the girls to the library all of the time when they were little. They got "new" books every week and it was good time together. We go to B&N quite a bit and after everyone has picked something out it can be over a $100 easily. I have a very hard time saying "no" when the kids want a book. Maybe it is time to revisit the library. I'll still buy mine though.. I'm a corner folder and I highlight, etc. lol
NWFlyer 2 #16 August 11, 2006 QuoteQuoteI love bookstores, too; except I love the ones like Barnes & Noble and B.A.M Powells is pretty good too! They have new and used. I can find just about anything there. Powell's rocks! We went there after the Oregon Brewer's Festival a few weeks back and my basket was full when I first went through. What I ended up doing was putting everything back that wasn't either used or new on deep discount, and writing down the other ideas to get from the library. I use the library as much as I can, sometimes it works for me but other times I'm just busy/distracted/not in a reading "mode" and can't read things within the three-week checkout period (and often I'm reading books that someone else wants so I can't renew them). I own far too many books that I'll never read again, though, so I am trying to be really good about library first... then if I really love it I'll go buy it."There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. micro 0 #17 August 11, 2006 i'm sort of a book snob. my "home library" is currently at about 800 volumes (pretty small compared to some of my friends) but I'll only buy new books. I can't stand having used stuff that is dirty or frumpled. I sort of have this quasi-fetish w/ the feel and smell of a new book... i have to pick it up and open the binding, hear it crack for the first time, and smell the print and the glue holding it together. oh it's like heaven. and I can't stand loaning them out either... there are rules you know... you can't open the binding flat (sacrilige!) you may NOT fold pages, and never shall lay a book open upside down (cringe!!!) When I see a person molesting a paperback, folding it backwards on itself, I feel like someone is scratching their nails down a chalkboard. I know, I know, it's a sickness. I miss Lee. And JP. And Chris. And...
skybytch 273 #18 August 11, 2006 Quote I'm a dork but I just love used bookstores. Me too. Not so much cuz I'm a dork, more cuz I'm cheap. I also like the fact that the are usually locally owned instead of huge chains.
Remster 30 #19 August 11, 2006 I only get paperback since I rad on flights and want them fairly compact. Costco has them cheaper, but selection is limited. They'll get a whole slew of one author, then slim pickings for a while... I need to check out the used bookstores in town...Remster
irisheyes 0 #20 August 11, 2006 I'm so glad I'm not alone!! I spend a good portion of my salary on books. I have tried to refrain myself, but to no avail. I buy them everywhere, online, new and used bookstores, anywhere they sell books. I have to go out this afternoon and pick one up for my intern who is leaving today and I know I'm going to get myself in trouble again. But, I also love the library. If I check out a book I enjoy, I usually end up buying a copy of it somewhere. And my library generally always has a "for sale" section which can be dangerous too. headoverheels 333 #21 August 11, 2006 I checked the first five, but I'm most likely to get books these days from one of the Amazon affiliates (mostly used), followed by mooching, followed by eBay.
LisaM 0 #22 August 11, 2006 My son and I go at least once a month. He gets to roam the kids section and I find a book and sit down and start reading. I sometimes go in with a list of authors when I am running out of stuff to read. ~ Lisa ~ Do you Rigminder?
MF42 0 #23 August 11, 2006 I love the entire environment of the used bookstore, but will only buy hardcovers there because I share Micro's loathing of molested paperbacks. I also can't stand the paper slip covers on hardbacks; those go straight into the trash the second I get home. I've been a library junky during bouts of poverty, but choose to buy most of the time because it's so satisfying to watch the collection grow, and because I'm a compulsive re-reader. Often I'll read a novel the first time for pleasure, then the second time to study the author's technique. Grue, sounds like I'm not quite as fast as you, but pretty close. An average novel takes me between four and six hours. Matt
sunshine 2 #24 August 12, 2006 I try to hit up the booksales at local libraries or garage sales. I also buy books off ebay. I refuse to pay full price for a book when i can pick them up dirt cheap a few years later. ___________________________________________ meow I get a Mike hug! I get a Mike hug!
