With new terror plot - Rigs on planes in US? Betting no?

Recommended Posts

The only way to lock a checked bag is to carry a firearm. I would consider checking and declaring a pistol with my rig just for the sake of locking my pelican case. Otherwise they reserve full right to open, break, steal or otherwise abuse your property.

soon we will all be traveling nude in a sterile clear tube.

I think I'm through with commercial travel until they find a better way to handle this as it just isn't worth the hassle.

What the fuck is wrong with mankind when all he wants to do is kill everyone?!?!?!:S:S:S

I'd love to claim that I'm giving up on commercial air travel, but even with the hassles, it's still a damned sight better than driving all over the place, or when I go home, swimming.

Buy your own plane. I did.

What's scary about this is that when you think about it, it means they've created explosives in a purely liquid state - one that you could put in a coffee cup.

Otherwise, I doubt they'd be too worried about us bringing our bottle of Pert Plus onto the airplane.

Nitroglycerin (the liquid in question according to one report) is a liquid and is not a new explosive, it's been around for well over a century. Could be disguised as baby oil or sun lotion. Coffee would be harder.

Trouble with nitro is that it's very unstable. I hardly think it's suitable for a serious plot, I suspect these folks were rank amateurs like the nutjobs they caught plotting to blow up the Sears Tower in Chicago, or the "Shoe Bomber".

If you put floaties and bring a pair of paddles it can.:D

OK, on a serious tip. WTF is this crazy talk? I tuned away from the news channels I have to take a break every so often becuase the reporting is way too trustworthy and I never become a synic.

I guess I will go check TSA but if anyone has a direct link that'd be great.(if there was on e in the OP, my bad)

Nothing new really... and I doubt it'd take too many bottles of nitromethane to take down a plane. I'm assuming the goofy 'explosives scanners' at the airports could detect that though.

I assumed the terrorists in this case put solid explosivies, such as C-4, into waterproof bags and slid them into like a shampoo bottle, or a thermos of coffee, etc. I think a block of C4, which is like clay, would look the same as shampoo (a thick gel) inside an xray.

then the detonator was hidden inside a laptop, or a digital camera, electronic car opener, etc.

hence why they are banning all liquids and gels, and anything electronic.

I assume the plan was to pull out the explosives, hook up the detonator, then either run to the cabin door, or to the back near the engines, and blow it up.

the scary thing is that this is a totally possible scenario, and that it would be pretty undectable. i don't see a way to prevent this, without doing the stupid bans they are using.... unless TSA will personally open all bottles of liquid or gel, and personally taste, smell, and probe them. :|

Carry the rig on. Just get there early so you have room in overhead compartments, and carry your cypres card with you if you have a cypres. My boyfriend had no trouble getting his rig on and off the plane on our way up to Prairie. On the way back, he had to check it because there was no room in overhead, and they misplaced it for about twelve hours because it didn't make it on the plane.

TSA is a joke. I've accidentally sent a pocketknife through their x-ray machines, and they didn't even notice. I take all my toiletries in my carry on, and nobody's stopped me once for carrying shampoo and any other liquid I've got in there.

Airport security is nothing more than security theater... it's a show to make people feel safer without actually doing anything at all except causing long lines and inconvenience.

Agree with everything you said. I'm Platinum, so I'm always first on the plane anyway - tons of room. The issue though NOW, is, having carried my rig on before with no problems, the TSA this morning has just implemented a whole host of what can be be carried on and what can't. That's where I'm coming from - Difference in TSA attitudes between 11pm last night and 7am tomorrow morning will be astounding.

It simply says they're not allowed in accessible baggage or on the person, so your car keys go in your suitcase and in the hold.

I've flown Continental 7 times in my life, the most recent simply because I just wanted to get home due to a mechanical delay on my normal carrier. Flight #7 was the only flight that Continental didn't lose my bags. Why? because I had them with me. The other 6 bags (which were all lost on the outbound flight) I've never seen.

YOu'd trust those clowns? If they do fuck it up or lose it (entirely likely in a non-standard situation like this), they'll pay at most a couple hundred bucks.

The last time I flew with a rig I had my cat with me and decided that I'd much rather put the sporting equipment in the cargo hold.

Paid about $20 for $5000 in added value insurance (Alaska (sp?)'s per-person maximum). Pretty insignificant compared to the plane ticket, rental car, etc. that goes with the typical skydiving vacation.

My home owner's policy also covers equipment stolen outside the home (used that coverage when some schmuck stole my camera helmet at Quincy) and I don't recall that excluding checked lugage. The caveat there is that some policies limit off-site coverage to some fraction of your total ($50K of stuff at home means $5K elsewhere).

That also has a replacement value rider that pays for the actual cost up to 4X cash value at the time of loss.

That said when given a choice I carry a rig on with me. While some one else will cover the financial loss, they're not going to provide custom replacement gear for an event I've taken off work for and flown to another state or country.

Says who? Mooneys have flown US --> Australia.

I mean without refueling stops :) I can't imagine island hopping across the pacific would be a quick trip, either.
