Ever hide your SO from your friends and/or family?

Recommended Posts

Even though I am between SO's right now - (but I'm still interviewing all the time B|)

I guess the term "insulate" is better - I even insulate myself from my family much of the time, especially after the divorce.

As far as friends go, it's all good.

I tried but they kept on looking and found her in the trunk of the car.:S:P

:D Good answer.

I can't believe how many people have voted yes. It has never even occurred to me to hide my SO from my friends or family. But then I've never made a big deal about introducing them either. I guess I just don't care whether anyone approves of who I'm dating...

Though now that I think about it, there has only been one time that my mom and a close friend both pointed out that someone was wrong for me... And of course I didn't listen to them, but they turned out to be right.

I think hiding your SO from your friends is a little weird, unless your really embarrassed that you're dating that person, or have something to hide. I denied the fact that I was dating a girl for 3 years to my family, due to the fact that she was asian, and that was unacceptable.

I feel very fortunate that my family doesn't have any of those kinds of biases and so I wouldn't feel the need to hide someone from them because of their race or religion or whatever. I choose my friends precisely because they are the type that wouldn't judge me for that, either.

I think my family and friends are generally the type who will go for the "if you're happy, we're happy" approach with respect to my dating life.

I try to take that approach with people, too. I may not be crazy about the person they're with (or I may like the person, but see negative things in the relationship), but unless I know the relationship to be abusive, I'm not going to judge or intervene. I might ask "Are you happy?" or say "You know, you don't seem yourself since you started dating [so-and-so]" but I'm not going to try to tell someone they shouldn't date someone else because of what I think of them.

Of course, this whole conversation boils down to the definition of "significant." Especially with my family, I'll usually hold off on sharing a bit until things get a little bit of traction; and if it's clear that the relationship is just a fling, I probably won't bother sharing with my family.

My now-wife was the first I took to meet my family. I was always intensely private.

When I brought Erin to meet my mom, I told her, "Mom, you always told me that I would come across someone that is 'The One.' Well, this is her."

My wife is hotter than your wife.

What my parents dont know, I dont have to explain.

Although, its been many years since Ive had to introduce a SO to them.
Now my friends, i think it best to keep them at a safe distance from the parentals.
Especially after your performance kel! :o:D:P
