The TiVo generation

Recommended Posts

We've had a TiVo box for several years now. It's broken and we are currently using a regular direct TV cable box.

My daughter has never know regular TV.

She asked me a bunch of questions...

"Why can't I pause the show?"

"Why can't I record a show?"

"Where are all my shows?"

"Why can't I fast forward through the commercials?"

I explained to her that the TiVo is more like a computer with a hard drive and that we store our information on there and retrieve it later.

Her last question,

"So, I have to watch what's on when it's on?"

I said, "Yes."

"And I can't watch it again?"

Her assessment...

"That stinks mom."

I still have an old VCR that I record programs on. I figure I'll change my ways when that finally breaks. Until then, I'm hopelessly unhip and frugal!

DVR is freaking awesome. I am going to get rid of my Comcast verison soon though. I am going to buy another computer to be a media center for my living room. Then DVR becomes free (after computer costs of course).
Why yes, my license number is a palindrome. Thank you for noticing.

DVR technology (I started with the Microsoft piece of junk) , and now have a Tivo, is by far and away the most satisfying piece of personal electronics I have ever bought. I don't EVER watch live TV any more. Even sporting events are paused at the first commercial, then fast-forwarded as needed.

A kid that has never gone without would definitely be lost without one.

Along those same lines...

I met a darling little boy the other day who was playing video games on my laptop.

His big question to me was... "How did you have fun all those years back when you were young?"

My answer was none to impressive.... we played ball outside...

It's gotten pretty cheap for cable or satellite- directv is sending out hdtivos ($1000 in 2004) for $20 and a two year extension. For straight OTA, unpolished PC solutions are 70-200$.

I'm embarrassed to admit I have no idea what Tivo is... not too sure about DVR either... does that mean I'm old already? I'm only 22! AHH!
I have never been able to pause a show, or any of that stuff...that must be pretty handy.

I'm sure by now you've googled it, but here's the link:

Kids hate my house when it comes to watching t.v. I have regular television stations (6 stations all together). Can't see paying so much money for cable when we are only home a few hours every night. We maybe watch 3 hours a night if that. My dvd player just die with help from a few kids the other day, So now we use the playstation 2 to watch movies.

I have DirecTV and I'm really not seeing this option... the only HD DVR that they are showing as available is $400... which is not close to $20... if it was only $20 then I might consider doing it... but since it doesn't appear to be... :|
