If I just broke something, I'd have friends there to take care of me and the emergency contact probably wouldn't be called.

Of course most of the DZOs who's businesses I frequent know my circle of friends and would likely pick someone appropriate for such a notification. Blues, Dave"I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" NWFlyer 2 #6 July 27, 2006 My parents. They've already gotten the "emergency call" from my (former) employer when I got hit by a car. It was during lunchtime and happened right in front of the office, so my manager felt she needed to call. Funny thing was, one of my coworkers had seen me before the ambulance carted me off and said "Want me to call your parents?" I said "NO!" figuring I'd call them in a few hours when I'd been checked out. I knew I was gonna be fine and I couldn't understand why they insisted on taking me to the trauma center ...feh... just cuz I got hit by a car while I was walking across the street. No need to panic the parents! Edit to add: my parents, especially my mom, are very much practical, deal with the situation, get stuff done kind of people. They may be hurting inside, but the instinct to get through all the logistics kicks in. I inherited this trait from them, too. It's just the way stuff is done in my immediate family; we grieve, but we handle stuff and get through it, too. So though I know that as painful as it might be, my parents could surely handle the call."There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke

wmw999 2,452 #9 July 27, 2006 My boyfriend; my son before that, and my brother before that when my son was younger. It should be someone who can keep it together enough to make all other necessary calls, and ensure that the hospital has your insurance information, and who knows what you want done with your organs if it's a really, really bad day. Someone who will make sure that there is someone with your elderly father when he finds out, or your sick mother, or who will make sure that some dipshit doesn't call your 9th-grader on his cell phone. brierebecca 0 #12 July 27, 2006 My mom. I would put my husband, but he's more often than not on the same plane, and that's not a good move. I really should think about giving specific instructions that my dad is NOT to be told anything - he freaks out. And my mom takes care of everything. Outta the 4 times I went to the hospital ER...my mom was there 0 out of the 4 times...and we lived in the same city..She did, however, stay with me in the hospital overnight when I was admitted from the ER...It's nice to have a mom that's an RN too. livendive 8 #20 July 27, 2006 QuoteDo any of ya'll that have a long-term SO still have your mom/dad as the emergency contact? Why? On the opposite side of that coin, I have an ex-long-term SO as an emergency contact at some places (work and at least a few dz's), and she's still got power of attorney for health care decisions in my advance directive. Just because her and I split up doesn't mean she wouldn't be able to gently break bad news to my family or that she wouldn't act in my best interests if I were unable to do so.
