FlyingJ 0 #1 July 25, 2006 A bit of tech help needed... I have a laptop that runs fine while plugged in, but won't recognize that a battery is installed. I can't confirm that the original battery is good, however I just tried a battery that I know to be good and fully charged and it did not work either. Might this be a power supply problem, or if the power supply were bad would that stop it from working at all, even when plugged in? If so, is swapping the power supply from a donor laptop something I (with reasonable technical ability) could do? I have two almost identical laptops now, one with a messed up screen and one with this power supply issue. Ideally I would like to get the laptop with the good screen running. Any suggestions?Killing threads since 2004.
jeremy556 0 #2 July 25, 2006 Try swapping out the power supplies, it shouldn’t be too difficult. Depending on manufacturer you can probably download a guide from their web site that will detail the procedure although it may be buried.
ntrprnr 0 #3 July 25, 2006 A few ideas... Depending on the laptop, you can "condition the battery." See if yours came with software to do that. Uninstall/reinstall the battery monitor - this helps sometimes, makes the system aware. with the system plugged in, do a BIOS upgrade, if one is needed. (Assuming a PC.) Hope one of those helps! ryanocerous 0 #4 July 25, 2006 I'm thinking if you update your firmware it might fix the problem. It seems like you've tried everything up to that point... what kind of laptop is it anyways?
FlyingJ 0 #5 July 25, 2006 Thanks for the suggestions everyone. Both laptops are a Dell Lattitude Cpi. I had one for about 6 years before the hard drive and power supply crashed on me. The second one I just picked up on eBay for $70. The eBay one has a good hard drive and power supply but a less than spectacular screen, so I thought I'd use it as a donor and get the original one up and running.Killing threads since 2004. yardhippie 0 #6 July 25, 2006 all the laptops we have here in the office are Dell Lattitude. The powersupplies are ALWAYS eating the big one. That and motherboards. Ive seen two go in the same unit in under 6 months.Goddam dirty hippies piss me off! ~GFD "What do I get for closing your rig?" ~ me "Anything you want." ~ female skydiver Mohoso Rodriguez #
