Icon134 0 #27 July 23, 2006 I learned to drive a stick in my brother's '83 S-10 back in Highschool... the first time I did it was somewhat late at night and made a wrong turn down a dead end street (near a local mall) during the three point turn an officer of the law inquired as to what we were doing... he didn't give us a ticket or anything (because we weren't doing anything wrong...) but I was too nervous to continue learning that night... I do know how to drive one though... and although I don't feel the need to have one in my car (my mazda Protege' is an automatic) I do think that sports cars are more fun to drive if they have standard trannys...Livin' on the Edge... sleeping with my rigger's wife... Shell666 0 #28 July 23, 2006 Up until I bought my Grand Cherokee 5 years ago, I always drove a stick. Got tired of the idiot that drivers that didn't know how to drive when I was driving the stick. 77 Honda Civic 79 Toyota Corolla 84 Chrysler Lebaron 90 Bronco II Miss driving those on the highway but not in the city! Probably won't go back to a stick as I won't go back to a car after having SUV's. And I won't go back to the "basic" models after having a LOADED Jeep! LOVE my heated seats in the winter! tbrown 26 #37 July 23, 2006 Learned to drive on a stick ('71 Ford Pinto). It's like who's in charge ? You or the car ? A stick puts you in charge, all the time. Taught my wife how to drive on a stick, taught our older daughter and several of her friends how to drive a stick (I'm very patient and get a kick out of that first "rodeo" lesson at a big church parking lot nearby - I tell the kids the "f" and "s" words are okay and they'll laugh about this for the rest of their lives). Finally bought an automatic 2 years ago when I broke my leg, thank God it was my left leg or I couldn't have driven at all. I'll start #2 kid off with the automatic, then get her onto the stick as soon as she's got a little road confidence. Your humble servant.....Professor Gravity ! bluheelrtx 0 #38 July 24, 2006 I have been driving for 22 years and I have never owned an automatic. I tell people that I don't know how to drive one, and I'm only partly kidding. I was indignant when I rented a car in Europe and they asked me if I was sure when I specifically asked for a manual. Fucking U.S. pussy drivers!!-- Jason -- Some people never go crazy. bluheelrtx 0 #40 July 24, 2006 Quotenever learned to drive a manual. driving in houston makes me gald i drive an auto. now, the e-gear paddle shift of a lamborghini gallardo, that would be awesome. I drive a manual in Houston. If you know how to drive a manual, it's actually easier than an auto. You don't have to keep your foot on the brake and you can use the engine to slow down most of the time. The only time it's worse than an auto is when some idiot kills somone and traffic only moves ten feet at a time.-- Jason -- Some people never go crazy. What truly boring lives they must lead. skymedic 0 #41 July 24, 2006 Yep...and love it. It is really to bad that now a days in the US you actually really need to look hard to find cars that offer a stick. Although there are a few US made cars that are ONLY stick. CTS-V comes to mind. yummmmmmm. But the car I want is not available in a stick. Magnum R/T from Dodge. Dumpster 0 #42 July 24, 2006 Nothing wrong with automatics - Nothing wrong with standard transmissions - I've been driving both for years. I would advise an automatic for folks who alot of city/stop-n-go driving. Replacing a clutch can be expensive, and alot of folks have less-that desirable habits, i.e. riding the clutch (lead to premature throwout bearing failure) or excessive/incorrect downshifting with a standard, which leads to clutch failure. Yes downshifting saves wear on the brakes and is important when going down steep, long hills, but many of today's clutches used in passenger car and light trucks aren't built like they were years ago and can't handle a regular diet of downshifting. Now, How many of us know how to shift without a clutch (and without grinding the gearbox into hamburger - )? If you've got a well - engineered tranny, it's a great skill to have. I had a standard-shift Ranger for years, and traded it in on my automatic Tacoma. Five months later I broke my left ankle, and was/am very thankful I had an automatic. Easy Does It
Amazon 7 #43 July 24, 2006 I purposely bought a 6 speed stick in my truck... I sooooo do not like towing my 7500 lb boat over passes without a stick.. I have yet to see an auto matic that will tow and downshift enough to safely tow a heavy trailer down the passes out here.

kallend 2,106 #48 July 24, 2006 My fun car (1946 MG) has a stick, but my commuting car is automatic. Driving a stick in stop and go Chicago traffic is not fun.
