Icon134 0 #27 July 23, 2006 I learned to drive a stick in my brother's '83 S-10 back in Highschool... the first time I did it was somewhat late at night and made a wrong turn down a dead end street (near a local mall) during the three point turn an officer of the law inquired as to what we were doing... he didn't give us a ticket or anything (because we weren't doing anything wrong...) but I was too nervous to continue learning that night... I do know how to drive one though... and although I don't feel the need to have one in my car (my mazda Protege' is an automatic) I do think that sports cars are more fun to drive if they have standard trannys...Livin' on the Edge... sleeping with my rigger's wife... Got tired of the idiot that drivers that didn't know how to drive when I was driving the stick. 77 Honda Civic 79 Toyota Corolla 84 Chrysler Lebaron 90 Bronco II Miss driving those on the highway but not in the city! Probably won't go back to a stick as I won't go back to a car after having SUV's. And I won't go back to the "basic" models after having a LOADED Jeep! LOVE my heated seats in the winter! Taught my wife how to drive on a stick, taught our older daughter and several of her friends how to drive a stick (I'm very patient and get a kick out of that first "rodeo" lesson at a big church parking lot nearby - I tell the kids the "f" and "s" words are okay and they'll laugh about this for the rest of their lives). Finally bought an automatic 2 years ago when I broke my leg, thank God it was my left leg or I couldn't have driven at all. I'll start #2 kid off with the automatic, then get her onto the stick as soon as she's got a little road confidence. Your humble servant.....Professor Gravity ! I would advise an automatic for folks who alot of city/stop-n-go driving. Replacing a clutch can be expensive, and alot of folks have less-that desirable habits, i.e. riding the clutch (lead to premature throwout bearing failure) or excessive/incorrect downshifting with a standard, which leads to clutch failure. Yes downshifting saves wear on the brakes and is important when going down steep, long hills, but many of today's clutches used in passenger car and light trucks aren't built like they were years ago and can't handle a regular diet of downshifting. Now, How many of us know how to shift without a clutch (and without grinding the gearbox into hamburger - )? If you've got a well - engineered tranny, it's a great skill to have. I had a standard-shift Ranger for years, and traded it in on my automatic Tacoma. Five months later I broke my left ankle, and was/am very thankful I had an automatic.
