HELP WITH TURNING CANOPY

Recommended Posts

I recently bought a safire 189 DOM 2000 and had it relined right away by para-concepts. It has a built in turn to the right. I don't know what it did before because I didn't jump it before the new lineset. The steering lines and control lines from the toggles to the canopy are exactly even. I also have rechecked my legstraps to make sure i am hanging even in the harness......any ideas?

How many jumps do you have on your risers? They stretch after time and can do some funky things to your canopy. That's my only guess other than the stuff you have stated.

Any chance of asking the original owner how it behaved?

That was pretty common in the Para-Plane cloud days. All we did was figure out as in your case how far down the left toggle came to fly straight. Lower the right toggle half the distance and retie. Raise the left toggle the other half and retie. The old sewing was front to back without the next seam back to front. then add the next cell. This progression made the far side from the start quite a bit different. If it opens on heading fine if not you have worse problems. It was not uncommon to see 4to5 inches difference when brake loops were together and toggles stretched out for a check.

I'm assuming you can't ask the seller how it flew. How many jumps were on the canopy when you bought it? If there weren't many, it could be possible that it had the turn from the start.

You might consider having someone else jump it to be absolutely sure it's not you. You could also try putting it on a different set of risers and in a different container to eliminate those variables. If it turns for someone else, on other risers and in a different container then it's either the canopy or the lines.

My best advice would be to talk to the folks at Para-Concepts and see what they suggest.

There were a number of Safires built in the USA that had serious turns built into them.

I probably have removed turns from at least 50 of them.

It could be that the Canopy had the turn removed( By offsetting line dimensions)before.

When you install a standard line set, the turn re-appears......

The above is my guess.
