For part of his career he flew Lightnings on a display team, the routine often involved a near mach1 pass across the crowd line very low. One day they were doing a private display for visiting dignitaries in the hope of securing export orders. Through a combination of failing to take into account changing air pressure and temp that day, and slightly overcooking the dive he ended up breaking the sound barrier about 40 feet of the deck in the middle of an RAF airfield! Broke windows for a mile around and caused structural damage to the control tower and some neighbouring buildings - and got the bollocking of his career when he landedDo you want to have an ideagasm? freeflir29 0 #7 July 12, 2006 That's why my job in the Air Force was so cool. Requesting a Kodak or "Rivet Check" pass was a common thing. Until and Italian F-4 took a few feet off my vehicle antenna.
mdrejhon 8 #8 July 12, 2006 You lucky guys -- the most I've gotten was a triple Twin Otter low pass at the end of the Canada bigways. Gotta love those low passes at the end of a boogie!
