Much much more then the other teams at the time... There's a reason for that: Look at this Italian training video!

lawrocket 3 #379 June 28, 2006 What's the card total now? Through 52 games, there were 23 red cards and 291 yellow cards. Six cards issued per game. Of course, maybe one of the yellows would not have happened had the English referee not lost count and given three yellows to the same player in a game. But then, the Russian ref may have simply given out 22 cards instead of only 20 (16 Yellow and 4 Red). All the talk is about the refereeing. We've seen this in the NFL at times, as well. The amazing thing is just how incredibly pervasive this is. So FIFA wants to crack down on sliding challenges? Card every one of them? I remember there eing refereeing issues back in 2002 - at least in the first round - but this year is stunning in the display of cards and odd penalties. You've got refs not calling it when the balls are handled. You've got good goals disallowed (i.e., France v. S. Korea) and bad goals allowed. You've even got refs giving yellows when they should be giving reds - as when the Prtuguese player got a yellow for a deliberate head-butt against the Netherlands. I don't agree with the penalty call against the Socceroos in their game against the Azzuri. Sure, they should have put the game away with the advantage. But that penalty call was just a bit too extreme. One poster referred to the "cardinal sin" of a defender leaving his feet in the penalty box. If it's a clean tackle outside of the box, it should be a clean tackle inside the box. Horrible calls have been made throughout. My wife is hotter than your wife. lawrocket 3 #385 June 28, 2006 When the game is done well and done right, then that should be the standard. We are at the point where it seems that a referee doing the job properly is worthy of praise. My son is starting to go "pee pee potty." This is worthy of praise, as it is something new. I get no praise for doing that because it's expected that I will relieve myself in the designated spot. Now refs are praised for doing their jobs correctly instead of getting an acknowledgment for a job well done. Can you see my point? My wife is hotter than your wife. If it's a clean tackle outside of the box, it should be a clean tackle inside the box. A clean tackle is one where the defender successfully defends the ball. Mr. Neill simply ended up tackling grass and ended up on his ass, obstructing Grosso from making a pass (no rhyme intended there, really). I love how he conveniently swings his left elbow to hit Grosso's knee and raises his hands in innocence immediately after. Apparently he didn't know the ref was standing at an angle where that would be completely apparent. Have a look. Excellent judgement call by the referee. That the call was made in the final seconds has absolutely no bearing on its legitimacy. F.ck what ESPN and the rest of the blatantly anti-Azzurri, stereotyping media say. Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.

We don't wear three stars without merit. QuoteThe Ref in the FRA - SPA game did it right overall. Bad calls have been a part of the game long before these recent tournaments. In the end, it is the players themselves that decide how many cards are handed out. lawrocket 3 #388 June 28, 2006 QuoteA clean tackle is one where the defender successfully defends the ball. No it's not. QuoteMr. Neill simply ended up tackling grass and ended up on his ass, obstructing Grosso from making a pass (no rhyme intended there, really). That's not a penalty. It's an offense. (Edited to add: since we're talking about refereeing, terms like this are important and not mere semantics). Here's the issue as I see it - it is a judgment call. There were two possible penalty calls that could have been made: 1) tripping the Italian in a careless or reckless manner; or 2) tackling the Italian to gain possession of the ball and contacting the opponent before touching the ball. No, #2 is the best choice on this. This becomes the judgment of the referee whether he actually tackled the Italian. The Italian put on a good move and the defender blew right by. The defender did not get the ball. Point given. Now the issue is about the tackling. There is no direct free kick awarded for obstruction. Instead, if a referee determines that a player has either played in a dangerous manner or has impeded the progress of the opponent, the proper decision is an indirect free kick. This is the best and correct option. It shouldn't have been a penalty kick. There would be no reasonable dispute if an indirect free kick had been awarded. But the ref went to a PK, and that was too much for too little. Yeah, I played soccer for about 14 years. Yeah, I reffed soccer for about 4. It's why I get irritated at hearing terms like "handball." No, it's "handling the ball." My wife is hotter than your wife.
masterblaster72 0 #389 June 28, 2006 QuoteQuoteA clean tackle is one where the defender successfully defends the ball. No it's not. Then Neill's move was not a tackle at all. It's a botched attempt at a tackle or a foot-first dive -- that's what it ended up being once Grosso outsmarted him. It ended up preventing a possible goal. Not only that but... No, #2 is the best choice on this. This becomes the judgment of the referee whether he actually tackled the Italian. The Italian put on a good move and the defender blew right by. The defender did not get the ball. Point given. No, #1 is in full effect in this scenario. Moving your elbow back toward someone's knee to trip them up is what you call tripping the opponent in a careless and reckless manner. That's what happened, and he did it in the penalty area. There is no way in hell Grosso could have kept his balance after running into that elbow with his knee. Then Mr. Neill raises his hands as if he's completely innocent -- laughable. Thus, penalty justly awarded. So I say it again: great call by the referee. QuoteYeah, I played soccer for about 14 years. Yeah, I reffed soccer for about 4. It's why I get irritated at hearing terms like "handball." No, it's "handling the ball." Both the penalty and the free kicks that resulted in goals were a bit of an overstatement, but overall he kept the number of cards, and the game, under control I agree. I'll also say that the Brazil - Ghana match was very sporting. Its a shame that a Ghanaian had to be sent off for a blatant dive in the box, but the rest of the match was played in a very fair spirit that really highlighted how dire a lot of this tournament has been. Both the refs and players hve been appalling in several matches IMO.Do you want to have an ideagasm?
