MF42 0 #1 July 10, 2006 Ok all you computer fix-it people, I've got a question for you. I want to load a CD into my computer. I push the button and the tray pops open, then immediately closes again before I put the CD in. Push the button again, same thing happens. It's a Compaq desktop, brand new about 9 months ago. I've been living in a cave for several years, thus my experience with computers is limited; I've only opened the case once to add some RAM. Before opening anything up and poking around, I decide to talk to Compaq tech support, and the tech there tells me the power cable to the CD/DVD rom is probably slightly loose. "That doesn't make any sense," I tell him. "If it weren't getting power then it wouldn't open or close at all." The tech guy puts me on hold to talk to his supervisor, then comes back and says the same thing. Slightly loose power cables cause erratic behavior. Hmm. So before I open her up and start rooting around in there, my question is: Was the tech support guy making sense or was he making up a bullshit story to get me off the phone? matt1215 0 #2 July 10, 2006 I think the guy's full of BS. My 2 y/o custom build does the same thing, always has . No idea why, probably a defect in the drive or a bad setting somewhere. I just hold the thing open long enough to do what I need to do.
BIGUN 1,321 #3 July 10, 2006 Can you reload the driver for your cd? Edit: P.S. - it is a compaq... Nobody has time to listen; because they're desperately chasing the need of being heard.
MF42 0 #4 July 10, 2006 Oh yeah, I forgot that part, I've already reinstalled the driver. No difference. Matt
BIGUN 1,321 #5 July 10, 2006 Well, give the cable connection a test... I doubt that's the issue, but give that a shot. DId your compaq happen to come with a pre-load called PC Doctor?Nobody has time to listen; because they're desperately chasing the need of being heard. davedlg 0 #6 July 10, 2006 Usually that has nothing to do with the driver, it is a physical problem with the drive. Most CD drives have a sensor that detects when you push on it to close it. The sensor can get miscalibrated so that when it is all the way open, it will think it is partially closed, causing it to automatically close. Either that or the drive isn't opening all the way and it is sensing this. Either way, have a look at the drives and the gears and make sure nothing looks out of whack. MF42 0 #7 July 10, 2006 You know, that makes sense, because thinking back on it, there have been a few times when I pushed on the tray to close it, and it didn't immediately close the first time. A screwed up sensor could do that. Matt
MF42 0 #8 July 10, 2006 Yes, I have PC-doctor. I actually didn't think of that because last time I tried it for a different program, the thing was useless. Worth a shot, though. Matt
Nutz 0 #9 July 11, 2006 Just put the cd in real fast while it is open. "Don't! Get! Eliminated!"
