bodypilot90 0 #1 August 1, 2007 I have a old tear drop container I want to know what's up with the reserve container. Is this ok? there is thin plastic peeling away. thanks
Spizzzarko 0 #2 August 2, 2007 It is probably the asbestos linning. Don't breath it in. The good thing is that if you spontainiously combust upon rentry your rig will probably not burn up. At least you can go in as a flamer with a non burning rig...Have your local rigger check it out.
britishbob 0 #3 August 2, 2007 The picture is somewhat unclear. But it is probably the coating on the cordura that is pealing off. The problem being that it may adhere to the freebag. So the chances are that it is no longer servicable, but get it checked out by your rigger.
riggerrob 643 #4 August 2, 2007 That looks like the urethane coating peeling away from the inside of the Cordura (nylon fabric) container. Urethane was originally applied to water-proof the fabric (i.e. if it was intended to make rucksacks for a rainy climate). Water-proofing is not an important factor in parachute container design. Think about how many holes - in parachute containers - allow rain to enter. Fortunately, peeling urethane has little short-term affect on parachute container serviceability. In the long run, peeling urethane will allow the weave to separate, but that takes hundreds (or thousands) of jumps to make a difference. More modern containers use a padded parapack - or Oxford cloth - lining to protect the urethane coating. Similarly, the latest fashion in hiking packs includes a layer of (silicone-coated) ZP canopy fabric to protect the urethane coating. In conclusion, peeling urethane coating may be ugly, but will not significantly affect the operation of your container for another 500 jumps.
