pringles 0 #1 June 23, 2006 Today at work we had a service tech in working on one of our machines. He had on a skydive las vegas t-shirt. So my dad went up to him and asked if he was a jumper. The guy replied no that he had jumped once and thats how he got the shirt. Thing was though that the shirt said instructor on it (he probably thought my dad was a dumb ass when the shirt clearly said instructor on the sleeve). My dad came over to my machine and said well apparently he has only one jump. I told my dad that I wasn't sure if I believed him. By the way my Dad never noticed that it said instructor. So my question is this. Do you ever play stupid when someone asks you about jumping? I have done it just so I don't have to answer the whole rainbow of questions (some good, some bad). Sometimes Im just not in the mood. Matt Davies
soulshine 0 #2 June 23, 2006 Until I get to know a person well I usually don't mention that I jump. I have tried to educate too many wuffos only to end up frustrated or annoyed with asnine questions. skydemon2 0 #3 June 23, 2006 If I have a shirt on and someone asks I talk to them for a few, otherwise its not something I blab about, I jump for me not to impress people with it so I dont advertise it.Beauty is only skin deep, but ugly goes clean to the bone! boinky 0 #4 June 23, 2006 I try to mention my skydiving every chance I can. Of course, I'm the queen of "If you wanna' know the answer something, you gotta' ask questions." livendive 8 #6 June 23, 2006 When I first started I talked about it all the time. Now I rarely bring it up except in passing, and my usual response to being questioned is "yeah, it's pretty fun" and then try to change the subject (unless I think they're about to blow smoke up my ass...then I play dumb). If I have nothing better to do and they seem really interested in a first jump, I'll explain that I can take them on a tandem or teach them to jump alone. For the most part though, I couldn't give a shit whether any particular whuffo ever jumps. Blues, Dave"I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" bob.dino 1 #7 June 23, 2006 If you're wearing a skydiving shirt, of course you're gonna get questions. These days, I rarely mention it, except when it's kinda hard not to. "So, what did you do on the weekend?"
MF42 0 #8 June 23, 2006 I just started and am completely obsessed with skydiving, so have a tendency to talk too much about it. At least, I did before I got hurt. Now random strangers see my nifty backbrace and ask questions about it. I don't want to give the sport a worse public image than it already has, so I lie and say I got hurt in a motorcycle accident. happythoughts 0 #10 June 23, 2006 When I first started jumping, I used to talk to everyone about it (most of the time against their will ). Eventually, I realized that it was my interest. When my roommates golf buddies came over, they wanted to talk about golf. It got to be boring to talk to non-skydivers about it. It was new to them, but it was the same 12 questions over and over to me. I met one newly-divorced woman who had moved in with her mom. "You can call back and talk to my daughter when you quit this foolishness." That was in the mid-90s.

Icon134 0 #17 June 23, 2006 If someone actually asks me if I skydive... then sure I'll tell them I jump... unlike a lot of people I live/work around a lot of type-A personallities... (i.e. military peeps..) and so many of them don't have the typical wuffo reaction to skydiving... many of them understand the alure... Livin' on the Edge... sleeping with my rigger's wife... jtval 0 #18 June 23, 2006 Yea, I'm in a similarwork environment. military. I talk quite a bit about it but I don't force it on people. I have no problem answering whuffo questions. I haven't encountered ANY people so closed minded to it that they would ask questions than act like an ass when hearing the info. I find its the ones who DON"T ask questions that have their minds made up....y;know, that I am crazy and out of control, adrenalin junkie etc.... thier loss, not mineMy photos My Videos
