kirrz 0 #1 June 20, 2006 What's wrong with my laptop? When I went to bed last night, I shut the top as normal leaving it on standby. This morning I've discovered that my laptop will no longer stay on if the power is unplugged. It's so weird. As soon as the power is unplugged, it goes dead. It won't start or do anything on its battery. I've left it charging for a few hours, still dies instantly when unplugged.. I suspect it's a battery problem but am curious to hear from anyone who knows for sure.. It is a HP Pavilion zt3000 if that makes any difference. billvon 3,067 #2 June 20, 2006 The battery's protection circuit has probably tripped, likely due to one of the cells going out of balance. (Most cheaper batteries don't have rebalancers.) A new battery should solve the problem.
Gravitymaster 0 #3 June 20, 2006 Sounds like a battery problem. How old is it?
kirrz 0 #4 June 20, 2006 3 years in April but I use it like my life depends on it... is it something that happens with time? Also, does anyone know (roughly) how much a new battery costs? What is the average lifespan of a laptop (heavily used)? I really want a Macbook Pro!!

A new battery should solve the problem. Or if it's been bumped, the contacts could simply be loose. Try removing and reseating the battery first (with the laptop off, natch). NlghtJumper 0 #7 June 20, 2006 How often do you use the battery? Another problem is if you don't periodically unplug it and use the battery then it could simply die. *not an expert, just been preached to about it from our S-6 numerous times... SuFantasma 0 #8 June 20, 2006 Try swapping the battery with you vibrator.... Second thought, NAH!
