MF42 0 #26 June 13, 2006 QuoteOK, first off, there is absolutely nothing wrong with becoming a nurse as long as that's what you want to do. But, if med school is really where your heart is, and nursing school is more like something you thought you would have to "settle" for, I think you owe it to yourself to go for it and sign up for the premed classes. And I think you already know that too! Good luck! My SO was in the hospital all last week, so obviously, I spent an awful lot of time there too. I can tell you that good nurses are an underappreciated treasure, and a caring sensitive doctor with decent communication skills is even more rare! You'll help a lot of people no matter which path you choose! I absolutely whole-heartedly agree with Tigra. I recently got to spend a couple days in the hospital. The entire nursing staff was polite, skilled, caring, helpful, professional, and generally went out of their way to make me feel better. The doctor was the opposite in every way. He seemed to be bored with me and my mundane run-of-the-mill back fracture. He avoided answering questions unless I got a little bit rude. I truly believe that since I didn't need surgery, in his mind I was totally undeserving of his attention. If you're gonna be a doctor, be a good one, not like that asshole. wmw999 2,439 #27 June 13, 2006 Yup. Many moons ago when I was young, I WAS going to be a doctor. Unfortunately, I don't memorize well, and many med school prerequisites require strong memorization skills (organic chemistry got me). I would have been a kickass nurse. You get to do stuff; there are many professional directions, and you can pick up your skills and move a little more easily from what I understand. There are nurse practitioners who do a lot of GP-type care. What do you want from the medical field? That's what should drive your decision. What kind of job, what kind of experience. Both are good, but they are different. Wendy W.There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)
Thanatos340 1 #28 June 13, 2006 This is really an easy one!! Nursing School. The Outfits are much cuter.. Beside if you go to Med School and I ever talk you into letting me play Doctor with you, You would be like all correcting me a stuff and that would not be as much fun!! kelel01 1 #29 June 13, 2006 I want to be (right now) a pediatric cardiologist. I say "right now", because I know med school is the place where you truly learn what you enjoy/are challenged by. I already have an appointment to shadow a pediatric cardiologist (my sister's), which I'm really looking forward to. Now I need a nurse to shadow. skymama 37 #36 June 13, 2006 Close your eyes and picture yourself 10 years from now being blissfully happy with your decision. Do you picture yourself as a doctor or a nurse? Whatever the answer is, follow your heart even if it is the tougher path. You'll be amazed at how fast that decade will go by and you'll feel silly for stressing out about this so much. skybeergodd 0 #40 June 13, 2006 First of all you should date a Paramedic for awhile...to get the emergency side of medicine then get your butt over to registration and sign up for Nursing school.....the higher the education in medicine means more $$$ but less hands on skill work(unless your a surgeon).....Look at it this way...a typical very busy ER has 4 or 5 doctors and 12 or more RN's, LPN's or EMTP's...so a doctor sees 3 times as many patients...they basically spend 15 to 20 mins. with each patient the nursing staff will spend hours....So if you want to feel like you made a difference in some persons life or to actually make a connection with patients then nursing school is the only way to go........Oh Yeah and the first sentence is a shameless advertisement for myself... doaster 0 #43 June 13, 2006 Well I should think this one is easy. I assume that the medical courses i.e med school would be applicable to nursing school and learn valueable information toward a nursing career, Whereas the nursing ciriculum would not be sufficient to meet med school requirements. Go with med school and if needed you can later go toward nursing. Remember the person in last place in med school still gets called Doctor.

kelel01 1 #45 June 13, 2006 Last place my ass. I can do better than that. And to answer Andrea, what I see myself as ideally is definitely a doctor. I just got to this point where I kept thinking, "Oh, it's too late." That began about 3 years into college, when I was a business major. Plus, I was just having too much damn fun to have to study for good grades. I'm over that now . . . pretty much all of it. I mean, I'm ready to study (and have been for a while now), and I (cognitively) know it's not too late. I just have this little voice in the back of my head constantly reminding me how old I'll be when I get done. But fuck it!
