Cobalt Questions

Recommended Posts

yes, I did the search, but I have not found any RECENT answers. :)

I have a Cobalt with about 500 jumps and lines with about 60 jumps. The thing is s SLAMMER. I have packed it any which way I can. I have read the manual. It makes almost no difference. I love the way the canopy flies, but I DREAD the openings. I understand a pocket slider and/or H-mod could cure it. - Anybody care to suggest what may be a better solution (or both ?:) and who to go to to get it done (hopefully in US/Canada)? I have jumped a Jedei with a pocket slider yesterday, and pulling in full WS flight the thing was soft as butter - it was an absolute JOY to to feel that opening :)

2nd Q :

I also just bought a Cobalt that has a rip across the top right endcell. In my crude assesment it will need a full topskin replacement on the endcell along with a rib replacement and a smallish patch on another cell (no seams). Atair is unresponsive, yes I called and emailed. Who would I turn to who can handle this ? THe canopy is DOM 2003 and seems to be the Gelevanor (south african ZPO) -

Looking forward to the answers.

I've heard that a 6 1/2 inch pilot chute and dumping head down will slow the openings on the Cobalt slammer.
:S

As for the repair, I'd say contact MEL of Skyworks rigging as a start.

I have used a smaller PC as Atair recommends. And after trying one full flight WS deployment with it, I don't care to risk an HD opening :) But point taken, a search shows this debated before. Thing is my previous Cobals/Spaces have treated me very well.

let's see what others chime in.

wow.... I can honestly say I have NEVER had a slammer with My Cobalt 135...EVER... Infact It scares me due to what seems like an abnormly long snivel... I weight about 200lbs and it flat out scared the crap outta me a few times until I learned what I was doing wrong and changed a few things in my deployment... Like Dumping in a track always was nice in that canopy as I would get a maybe 800 foot opening that way:) as opposed to several 2K openings LOL... And I broke t5-7 in my back when I was in the Army so I dont want anything remotley near a slammer opening or for that matter what some might refer to as a "Brisk Opening" :) And I packed that thing so many different ways it was nuts... Hell I had a few pack jobs where I thought "Maybe this crap errr I mean pack job will be my first chop". seems Im still waiting for my first chop...
I hated to pack BTW lol and sometimes it showed in the crap I shoved into my bag lol than I got smacked around by some Rigger friends who got me on the right packing track:).....

I had great openings dumping out of a full speed track. No joke. [:/] Then I got rid of the thing.

yes, I know that's supposed to be the case. And it was with my 2 previous ones. But this one wnats to be difficult.

Have you checked the line trim? Have you compared the length of the respective lines?

From what i have seen, this is the problem with cobalts. You either get a good one or a bad one, sounds like you got a bad one.[:/] I don't know about a pocket slider but the h-mod will make your cobalt dive more and fly wonderful. On mine the openigs were about the same, just a little searchy during the snivel. I had the h-mod and a lineset done by skyworks rigging, i would send it to them and tell them to fix it. They will jump it and probably put a lineset on it. I guess you have to decide how much you want to spend to fix it or to just get rid of it and try another one.:)

Never look down on someone, unless they are going down on you.

I'd rather pack how it was recommended: nose pushed back, slider pulled over, tail rolled tightly.
----------------------------------------------------
If the recommended way do not work (hard opening) you need to try different method and there is nothing wrong with psycho packing, I never roll or push the nose (cobalt,velocity,x-aos 21,)I roll the tail to contral the opening speed (like saber roll the tail 10 times or more )
that and slider on the slider stop.
I roll the nose on my troll because it open hard on terminal (I have valve on it) twice it open harder than not rolling the nose(It might not do the same for other ) so I never roll the nose any more(ever canopy, same make, same option well act different)

Agreed. My 150 was nice, a 135 at the DZ is nice but the 135 demo I got from the factory with 0 jumps on the canopy opened so hard multiple times in a row that it caused the video to actually generate missed frames. Answer from Atair was "The canopy was new, it will get better once you jump it more".

If you have a good one I'd jump it and wait as long as safely possible to reline it. If I had a bad one I'd pocket slider it. I've got 75+ wingsuit jumps with a Jedei 136 with a pocket and it opened great, I wouldn't tolerate a canopy that opened hard anymore.

In terms of repairs, Atair outsources everything so just find a rigger to do the work up there in Cleveland or ship it to Mel or any other major loft.

try psycho packing, just like any other canopy you get there is bad one here and there but most of the cobalt has nice opening, now saber that slams ever body

I have done all but side/flat pack. What's funny is that the recent chop was on a very neat pro-pack.

I guess unless somebody wants to buy a slammin' Coblat a rigging loft will get some $$$ from me.

thanks for the answers. And Gabor - quit fucken arguing, it's not what this shit is about - just answer the damn question or stay quiet.
