Do you talk to people at your DZ about DZ.com

Any particular thing will have at least one group of supporters and one group of non-supporters.

Fact is, it's a place for people who skydive to interact with other people who skydive, when they aren't out skydiving. There isn't much bad you can say about it as being a forum. The only real point of division I can see is the combination of advice/ideas from many different experience levels being shared with people of many different experience levels. It's a valid and very rational point for people to use instructors who know the person's capabilities in person when it comes to consulting for information and instruction on various things related to them and skydiving. It's a forum for sharing ideas, not a training/instructional resource.

So inherently, you have people that appreciate it for what it is, and respect its boundaries and limitations as an internet message board. But there are people on the outside of any message board, or even the internet for that matter, that see it as a potential hazard to newbies or anyone who isn't in a position to be listening to relatively anonymous sources about what they should and shouldn't do. Neither party is at fault, they just have different perspectives. More of what goes on here is bullshitting (not in a negative connotation) and idea sharing. You don't really have people (very often) trying to educate someone when they shouldn't be. (EDIT: I should point out that I just don't see it very often. But it's more because I consider myself to have a proper attitude and perspective about the place. Plus I'm in no position to call someone out for "teaching.") But there are exceptions and when you have a contrary perspective about the board, the exceptions are all they will see. Nothing wrong with that per say, but it doesn't mean the website is bad.

It's not a surprise that there are people who could care less about DZ.com. Maybe internet socialization isn't their thing. No harm no foul. The only burden of responsibility is the forum users to refrain from doing things which are potentially damaging for good reason.

I would feel awkward having a conversation with someone, perhaps bringing up DZ.com, and having some trite and unfounded comment made about it, if I wasn't doing something wrong like quoting it as the bible. So I can see why people wouldn't bring up the DZ.com goings-on at their respective DZ. You're gonna find people who don't like something you do, because they don't understand it or had a negative experience with it. Pick and choose your battles.

You really need to get laid dude.

Do you ever mention DZ.com to people at your DZ,newbies or experianced jumpers.

Yes I do, often print off threads and take them to d.z. to be read...regarding skydiving. Most skydivers I know do not have the time online- or are not sitting at a keyboard as part of their employment.

As I spend my work days in my home office- building websites, maintaining websites, designing logos---and graphics, I have breaks everyday waiting for files to be sent or reply from customers regarding the next step of work to do for them-

I am entertained coming to dz.com!

Besides what a popular moderator said earlier that this was a good place to come and get advice, i beg to differ. Flame away. The DZ is the place to seek knowledge, from people who know you and watch you fly and observe your tendencies. Sorry Sky

Don't be sorry at all, Richard. I think it's all in the presentation. Notice that I said "answers to questions that you might have when you are off the DZ" or something like that. You know, for those people that just don't make it out to the DZ every weekend. Telling people to "ask their instructors" is fine and dandy if they have cause to be around them at all. Well, I am the instructor to a lot of people who visit this site and I recommend it to them, but tell them to take what they read with a grain of salt. I don't think it takes a smart person more than about five minutes to realize that responses written by some kid with ten jumps and no ratings might not be "definitive." I think the plusses far outweigh the minuses. I think a person who has a lot of time on their hands can learn much more about the sport than "technical knowledge". I think the personalities displayed by people here, sometimes not accurately by the actual person making the posts, give a pretty good impression of those they will eventually run into on the DZ. I hope that makes sense. Like you said: there are a lot of people on here who are very different in real life. That goes both ways. Some people are really dicks on here, but cool in real life. Conversely, some people who come across as OK on here are very, very fucked up in person. I have met enough people on here personally to make that statement so, in the end, I think it all evens out. I think that, while twisted in some ways, this forum is a good representation of the actual skydiving community.

Cheers,

Chuck

Gee thanks Chuck... You did everything but call me out by name...

No seriously, good points. To rwieder, I agree completely about rhino. I spent a decent amount of time with him at Rantoul 2002, and I for one, thought he was a hell of a guy.

As Chuck basically said... All you need is a little "common sense" (unfortunately there seems to be a very limited supply :o )

Goudha is for Buddha, and that's good enough for me!

He is a good person. He justs isn't always politically correct. (Hell, i'm not either far as that goes)

He and i speak on the phone occasionally and have always been friends. We had a blast years ago when we both jumped SDSL in Rosharon. I hated it when he moved away, but a man's got to do what a man's got to do. I plan on going to the WFFC and look forward to seing him there.

Thread drift...

It won't happen because I don't pursue it. I don't pursue it because I don't see the reward as justifying the time, money, and effort expended to acquire it. I don't value it as highly as most people, and I'm gonna keep it that way for a long time.

I got more important things to concern myself with than getting laid. I just don't care about it enough to make me want to get out there and try. Weird... maybe.

While a large part of it is choice, the other part is circumstance. I don't have girls fawning over me and I'm not a charmer. I don't have any problems talking to girls that I don't have talking to guys. I simply talk too much and not always about anything interesting.

Anyways :D ... it's not gonna happen.

End thread drift.

Same here. He was such a dick on the forums, but in person he was truly wonderful. I would love to hang out with him in person again. He totally showed me what a true gentleman is.

As opposed to me.

That goes without saying.

There are very few people on here who should either be listened to or are qualified to give advice. I tend to stay here in the joke forums because too many idiots have taken over the topical forums and try giving advice when they have no business opening their mouths, and should be opening their ears instead.

HAHAHA That is so true. I haven't heard any bad advice on here that I haven't heard on the actual DZ. People need to take things with a grain of salt, and that is just as true IRL as it is online.

I think its a great website for exchanging ideas and advice.
