If you knew you'd die skydiving...

Recommended Posts

....would you still do it? If for whatever reason, (and for the sake of argument) you just knew for fact, that you would die one day from a skydiving accident, would you stop jumping? You have no idea when or how you would go in, could be the next jump, could be 1000 from now.

We all know the risks and accept them, with intent on being safe and not getting hurt or dying, but if you knew that sometime in the future it would mean your death, would it still be worth it? What if you have a family? Kids?

I can't answer that cuz it matters a great deal WHEN I die. I got a lot of things I want to do in this life, so it'd really suck if I died tomorrow.

But if I do die suddenly, I'd rather it be from skydiving than a car crash, struck by lightening, etc. Oh, but only if it was an accident, not something I could've prevented. That would really suck. :(

Sometimes I think that skydiving will be what takes my life, but there is definitely a difference between thinking and knowing. I suppose I would want to know the alternative . . . how/when would I die otherwise, b/c it's gonna happen.

I already know I'm going to die from lack of blood to the brain, but I haven't stopped using it...

...Wait, thats not right....:|

I'd keep jumping, cos it's probably my motorcycle thats gonna kill me...

Absolutely, without a doubt, I wouldn't make another jump.

Life is sweet and there are too many people/things for me to live for. I love life, and that is why I skydive, but I don't want to die. Knowing there is a chance I could die doing it is worth the risk, but if I KNEW I would die doing it, then no way.

Skydiving and the people in it are ALOT to do with who I am and where I get me happiness from, but skydiving is not everything. I could still have the friends in the sport without jumping, and to me, that is what it is all about.

I love this sport, but I wouldn't die for it.

I absolutely and totally agree with this statement. I love skydiving and the friends I have made through it, but it is in no way the only thing in the world. I would quit without a second thought if I knew I would die doing it.

Yes. You will die, does it really matter how or when it happens? What matters is how you lived the life, not how it ended.

In this situation I would say no. Why? Because of responsibility.

I KNOW that every time I go up in the plane I COULD die. That, to me, is really no different than knowing skydiving will kill me.

I treat every jump like it is THE one that will kill me. In that way I keep my senses up, and pay serious attention to safetly. To say that skydiving WILL kill me.... Hmmm, let me pose a question to you:
If you knew, without a doubt, that you would die from smoking, would you quit? if you knew, without a doubt, that you would drive in a horrific automobile accident, would you quit driving?

Fear holds many people back. The fact is that, for many of us, fear is what drives us forward.

Since to me there really is no difference between what you are asking and what I feel every day, No, I wouldn't quit/yes, I would keep jumping.
It's your life, live it!

I would do it. I figure we all have to die sometime, I would rather die doing something that I love doing, and enjoy doing verses getting hit by a bus, or living through a horrible cancer or something.

So if I KNEW that I was going to die skydiving, then stopped jumping, would I live forever? Or would it be some sort of time/space paradox that would cause the fabric of the universe to unwind like an old sock?

Nope, I would quit, right then and there. But that's the mystery of life, isn't it? You really don't know how it's going to end. My wife did make me sell the motorcycles, 'cause that was the most likely for me.

If it was in the stars that skydiving was how you'd buy it and you quit jumping, would you be immortal?:D

There is an old saying, "It's not if... it's when"

Skydiving may not kill you, but if you stay in the sport long enough, you'll probably break something. Easily 20% of the people who I know with 5 years in sport, have metal or some old x-ray pics.

If I was 25 and had young kids, I'd worry about it. I'm not. I'm past the point where other people are dependent on me. It is a different choice at this point.

If the choices are:
1. Live until 80 and suffer for the last 20 years from all the variety of stuff that I have injured.
2. Go in at 60.

Unfortunately, there are worse things than dying and I've seen a few.
