Darius11 12 #1 January 26, 2005 Imagine if you could jump out of the plane and just hit the ground and get up and walk away. There was absolutely no risk of getting hurt or killed. Hmmm....gets me ta thinkin'....~Jaye Do not believe that possibly you can escape the reward of your action.
Shotgun 1 #5 January 26, 2005 I think it would be much _more_ fun... The danger aspect of it never had anything to do with why I liked it. I could accept the danger that was involved, but I don't think it was ever part of the attraction.
chaoskitty 0 #6 January 26, 2005 Yeah, I'd love it if the danger factor was not an issue. Howver thats what makes whuffos go whuffo, so if danger were not an issue, a lot more people would do it.

Douva 0 #11 January 26, 2005 I think surviving each jump certainly contributes to the sense of accomplishment. If somebody who'd never jumped could just strap on a camera helmet, a BirdMan suit, and a skysurfing board, all at the same time, and jump out of a plane without fear of death or dismemberment, most of the accomplishments in our sport would be seriously diminished. Accomplishment comes from pushing the limit. Without danger, there are no limits.I don't have an M.D. or a law degree. I have bachelor's in kicking ass and taking names. windcatcher 0 #13 January 26, 2005 hmm, I would have to say no it wouldn't be as much fun...that's why I jump out of airplanes for enjoyment, rather than sit around and knit. Besides, even though skydiving provides lots of fun, the danger factor of it all is what helps keep you in your right mind. I don't like skydiving just BECAUSE it's dangerous; but danger is a part of what makes it more thrilling. Mother to the cutest little thing in the world... freefal 0 #14 January 26, 2005 I skydive because it's fun. I BASE jump because it's fun... and it scares the hell out of me. I had a friend that summed it up pretty well once, "People get into skydiving for alot of diferent reasons, but they usually stay because of the people." Obviously we all try this for all kinds of reasons, like conquering a fear, or for the freedom, or for the adrenaline, or just out of curiosity, but above all else I think the people and the community aspect of skydiving is the best part. After all, solos get pretty boring after a while. "Ignorance is bliss" and "Patience is a virtue"... So if you're stupid and don't mind waiting around for a while, I guess you can have a pretty good life!
SkymonkeyONE 4 #15 January 26, 2005 QuoteYou don't think the rush has any thing to do with it being fun? The rush has nothing to do with it being dangerous. I get a rush riding a looping rollercoaster, but those are safe enough that anyone over four feet tall can ride them. Once again, "rush" does not equal "danger" in my book. I partake of far more dangerous activities than skydiving, but got no particular rush from them.

This is exactly how I feel, though I think that if danger wasn't involved, we would see more people drop out of the sport. I'm not saying that would be a bad thing either as I'm sure more would join too. basically you'd have the thrill seeker adreneline junkies leaving and being replaced by people that like safety. ahegeman 0 #18 January 26, 2005 While the danger involved doesn't make the experience of an actual falling through the air any better for me, I think the PEOPLE involved in the sport would be entirely different. The danger keeps the community smaller than it otherwise would be, and fosters closer bonds among us. Nobody wants to see anyone bounce, so we all help each other as much as possible and watch out for each other. That makes the community stronger, makes the personal relationships stronger, and DOES make skydiving as an all-in experience better for me.--------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'. --Dave Barry
