billvon 3,076 #5 May 29, 2006 >They eat #1 poo which causes them to produce pellet #2 poo. #1 poo pellets are called cecotropes. Rabbits have a problem common to many mammals who try to subsist entirely on grass (cellulose) - mammals can't digest cellulose by themselves. So they enlist bacteria to help them. There are two basic ways that mammals use this bacteria. The first is the ruminant method. These animals (like cows) have several stomachs. One is a general storage pouch full of enzymes and bacteria. Grass goes here for a while, then gets puked back up where the cow chews on it some more. Then it gets re-swallowed where it makes its way through a few more stomachs, each one with a slightly different pH and bacterial mix. All these bacteria break down cellulose, create proteins from nitrogen and synthesize things like B vitamins. Then it goes down the small intestine, the large intestine etc like most other animals. It's relatively efficient. The other method is called hind-gut fermentation. In these animals, all the bacterial processing takes place in the cecum, which is a big chamber that comes right after the small intestine. Bacteria live here and break down cellulose into materials that the large intestine absorb. Since this process misses the small intestine, it's not very efficient if the animal eats a lot of cellulose (like rabbits do.) Rabbits are hind-gut fermenters too. If they just used the bacteria they had and tried to absorb everything from their large intestine, they'd have to eat a _lot_ because that process isn't very efficient. So they produce a special kind of feces called cecotropes; this allows them to give the more-efficient small intestine another crack at the broken down cellulose. It's a way for a rabbit to effectively 'chew its cud' and get more food value out of what it eats.

swedishcelt 0 #10 May 29, 2006 I saw it once. It is a strange looking bunny in that posture and it ruined Easter for me forever. Remember that commercial where the Easter bunny clucks and lays an egg? Did the bunny have to eat chicken poo and could the Easter bunny be the start of bird flu? Maybe the Easter bunny was the bird transition of bird flu from chickens to humans!! Conspiracy theorists!!!
