MEMORIAL DAY......... ITS NOT JUST A THREE DAY WEEKEND!

Recommended Posts

As you enjoy your long weekend please take a moment to remember what this holiday is all about, the soldiers past and present who have given their lives in defense of this country and our way of life.

If you know a family who has lost someone take a minute to think of them or call them. If you dont know someone thank a veteran for their service (I know its not Veterans Day), but do something in memory of the fallen...............

Feel free to post anything you want here, I would like this post kept alive until the weekend!

I know I will be thinking of them as we celebrate this holiday ......... and to all the vets in here THANK YOU!

This Memorial Day takes on spcial signficance for me.

As some of you know, my family and I now live outside a very small town in rural Illinois. A couple of weeks ago, Bravo Company of the Effingham IL National Guard returned from Iraq and there was a huge parade for them. Weeks later, the streets are still lined w/ yellow ribbons, flags, and signs welcoming them home.

However, it was not all roses. On the very day of their return, a local high school graduate, Chris Donaldson, was killed when his Chinook helicopter crashed in Afghanistan. He was the very first casualty that this rural county suffered. About a week or so after the festive homecoming, there was a much more somber gathering on the streets of Effingham. Morners lined the streets of the town, holding candles and flags, to greet the funeral procession which consisted of cars from the funeral home, family members, at least a hundred motorcycle riders (I forget what they are called, this group), fire trucks from every nearby county (at least 20 trucks!!), police cars, and National Guard vehicles. Since this is a small town, everyone knew who this young man was and the streets were again filled with people. It was an incredibly moving sight. Not being a native of the area, I didn't know him, but it didn't seem to matter. I couldn't help but cry anyway. I was witnessing an incredibly moving event and it changed me -and hopefully the lives of my children- forever.

I miss Lee.

Thank you for the awesome post! (Thank you for your service...if you're a Vet.)

I am so thankful for my best male friend from high school, Rob, for his service in the Persian Gulf. I thank to DZ.commer Max Ramsey aka Gawain for his recent service, during which he lost his leg.

I am extremely thankful for my ex, Spener's service in the Persian Gulf (all 3 or 4 times), for his recent service in Iraq and for his upcoming service (coming soon). He is an amazing person, and I am thankful that he is giving so much of himself to our country. I am most thankful that he is still alive.

Cheers and much gratitude to all of our Vets and to all who have given their lives for our country. Thank you!

Me too. B| As for the original sentiment, I agree. There are many who gave all for us. Maybe I can sneak in a cross-country flag jump this weekend in their memory. ;)

Kewl post. My new cause is the VFW National Home. It is a shelter / orphange for the children of service people that are killed in action. I am thinking that it is one of the best ways to honor those that have fallen, by helping to insure that thier children lives are not lost also. Just an idea if it strikes anybody.

Thank you, all of our dear servicemen and women
for doing the tough stuff that we tend to take for granted. My prayers are for those of you currently serving to come home safely and quickly; for the loved ones of the soldiers who've passed on, and for all of us to remember the freedoms we have now are thanks to those who've been willing to die for what we believe in.

Thanks to you all. ~
