How did you end up in the job you're in?

Recommended Posts

I needed a job when I moved back to Austin from Phoenix, and they offered. :S

Actually, I love my job. It's more than I ever imagined!

I always wanted to be a Marine Biologist because I wanted to swim with Shamu. :D:P Turns out as I learned more about science the less I liked it.

So I went to college for Human Resources, it was the buzz word at the time, jobs were plentiful. By the time I got done with my degree, job market was not so hot. It took me some time to find a job in my market, and the job turned out to be nothing like what I went to school for. Definately, 'entry-level' [it SUCKED]!

Then my boyfriends roommate at the time told me about a job available at his company in the mortgage industry. I got the job working with the outside sales force, I have since been promoted to a Business Analyst and will start working on my MBA in Finance in the Fall on my companies dime. I love the company, love the job, and have been here for about 4 years, definately a good move. :)

That's great!

And though I always wanted to be a veterinarian the type always changed---just before college I wanted to be a "marine" veterinarian so I could help injured Shamus:P

Now I just volunteer & give them my $$$:D

I had broken my cell phone because I went through the carwash with my sunroof open, so I went to radioshack to get a new phone. They didn't have any used phones for me to buy at the time for Verizon... but at that moment, this guy walked saying he had a used verizon phone he didn't want anymore, and he wanted to sign on with sprint. I overheard him and offered him a dollar for his verizon phone, he gladly gave it to me. While he was getting signed up with sprint, I was bored and started greeting customers for the hell of it, the manager saw me greeting people and offered me a job there at radioshack. I started working there 3 days later.

hmmm....got tired of being laid off with my previous career path so I decided to be crazy and go back to school full-time to change careers. As a result, I started looking for something part-time that would work around my school schedule but would give me some exposure (even limited) to what I'll be going to school for. Hence the job I'm in now.

I'm being punished for things I did in a past life. Or at least for things somebody did at some point in the past.

I was in school for aerospace engineering and almost making enough $ to get by. Brother calls and says a friend of the family needs someone to watch their house/dogs while they travel for the summer. It was supposed to be for 9 weeks. It ended up being for 6 1/2 years. I became one of their adopted family. I was not the only one. They had several foreign exchange students that stayed with them prior to me. We got to know eachother and considered ourselves adopted brothers. I then left and eventually ended up in the NorCal. Once there, one of my adopted brothers told me about a position that was open with one of the companies he worked with and go interview with them. Little did I know that I had the job before I walked in. Started out as a lowly safety monitor, but with some classes and 8 years later, have moved up to Field Engineer/Inspector. So I went from dog watcher to field engineer.

My hunny and I were JUST talking about this, as we take our baby to doggie day care every Friday and sometimes on Saturdays if we want to be gone all day (we won't leave him longer than 4 hours unless he's coming too:P).

We get a discount for being regulars but SHEESH! They must make a fortune and have a blast doing it---no overhead, just own a big empty space indoor & out for dogs to run and play. So simple and so much fun (as long as you don't mind picking up dog doody w/ an inside-out plastic baggie:D)

GREAT idea!:P

I can tell you, some "dog nannys" have it MADE. I met a girl in a bar once who lived with a family, had her own room in a GORGEOUS beachside mansion (I knew which one right away when she described it), meals, use of the pool/ocean--totally live-in. She did cleaning and errands and stuff like that, too, but basically she got paid about $40k/year and all her expenses covered since she lived there. NOT BAD AT ALL!!!

I can list 10 things at my current job that I find much more disgusting than picking up a little dog crap. Mind you, I currently work with attorneys :|

My job title is "computer network technologist", but really I do ocean research.

As a surfer and physics undergrad at UC Santa Cruz, physical oceanography and geophysics appealed to me.

The professor, who taught fluid mechanics and physical oceanography, did research in polar seas. I think staying near the ocean and the possibility of seeing polar bears were lame factors that eventually led me to my present job of 14 years at UC Santa Barbara.

I ran a software vendor selection process in my last job. The vendor we ultimately ended up contracting with is the company I work for now. I left the old job to take the summer off; later in the summer the sales rep from my current company (who became a good friend through the whole process) called up and said "So... ever thought about working for us?" Since I didn't want to move to Boston, I hadn't really thought about it, but they said I could do the job I'm in, which can be based anywhere.

And so I'm a road warrior. [:/]

Air traffic controller. Some buddies of mine were taking the test, so I filled out the paper work and tagged along. Wasn't looking for a new job at the time, but a year and a half later I was starving at a friend's start up business, and was ready for a change. It's been a great career.

Don't know if it's really a good job to give to someone who likes watching the ground rush up at them, though.:P

I'm a college student and packer right now.

Ended up being a packer because that was the only way that I could afford to skydive. I'm still a packer because it is so hard to walk away from good money.

My major is Speech and Hearing Sciences. My mom tried to get me to look into this field for about 3 years before I finally listened to her. She thought that it might suit me quite well. I kept blowing her off, not wanting to do something just because my mom thought that I should. Eventually, I was frustrated and confused about what I wanted to be someday so I finally caved in and began researching the field. I found out that my mom was right. I now love this stuff. It's neurology, English, biology, psychology, and physical therapy (among other things) all blended together into one amazing field. I can't wait to be a therapist and make a difference in peoples lives.

Air traffic controller.

My brother was in college for Hotel/Restaurant management. He drove a cab until he got too many points and lost his license.

He was in the Air Force overseas as an ATC on a helicopter pad. He couldn't drive cars in the US, but he could fly/drive overseas. :D

Reminds me of a friend who got his pilot's license yanked for 60 days by the friendly FAA, after a long and contentious battle. He said to them "That's okay. I'm flying helicopters for the National Guard five days a week. It'll be nice to have weekends off for a while."

Funny shit. :D:D
